Malaysia's foreign ministry has summoned a senior Singaporean diplomat over allegations that the city-state helped the US and Australia tap telecommunications links in Asia for espionage purposes.

Singapore's government has not publicly responded to the allegations, which were published on Monday in Australia's Sydney Morning Herald and cite documents from National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The Malaysianforeign minister, Anifah Aman, said in a statement that his ministry was seeking clarification from Singapore's high commissioner to Malaysia.

"If those allegations are eventually proven, it is certainly a serious matter that the government of Malaysia strongly rejects and abhors," Anifah said. He said spying against a good friend and neighbour was unacceptable.

Anifah's ministry earlier this month protested to US and Australian embassy officials over accusations that their diplomatic missions house surveillance equipment used to collect electronic communications.

The Sydney Morning Herald report said an NSA map published by Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad this week confirmed that Singapore played a role in helping the US and other intelligence partners tap undersea cables.

Similar spying allegations rocked relations between Indonesia and Australia this month, with Jakarta recalling its ambassador, downgrading relations and suspending co-operation on people-trafficking after claims of Australian tapping the phones of Indonesia's president, his wife and eight Indonesian ministers and officials in 2009.

PM Najib's counterpart, the Indonesian President, immediately called off all levels of military co-operation with Australia when Snowden's leaks revealed that the latter has been spying on Indonesia and her leaders for more than a decade. The Indonesian President also refused to co-operate with Australia over the boat refugee problem.

Moreover Indonesia demanded from Australia an official apology.

Let's see what actions PM Najib will take over the next few days to teach Sink-a-pore a lesson. And his actions will confirm or disprove Dr Mahathir's calling of PM Najib a softie.

Will Najib freeze all high-level contacts with LEEgime?

Will Najib demand an official apology from Pinky?

One thing is certain: if this spying revelation were to take place during Dr Mahathir's administration and Old Fart was the PM of Sinkieland, Dr M will humtam Old Fart left and right. And this is for sure.

Edward Snowden is a hero. That's why the US govt (and its bitch-allies around the world) want him to be extradited or killed.

Karma is unfolding before your very eyes.

Najib will have no choice but to play the hardball on this issue. Else oppositions and Dr M will capitalize on this to undermine Najib.

Expect more fireworks.

Don't worry, we can drink more Newater. Now a higher concentration of it.

Yeah right. Higher concentration means higher concentrations of heavy metals.

Ordinary Sinkies have no choice but to drink Newater.

Pinky and FamiLEE drink 100% distilled water, free of any heavy metals.

No wonder Old Fart hopes to live beyond 90 years of age.

Regarding the railway land, if you notice the actions of the Johor Sultan, he very tulan that it was given back so easily. He has to come down to drive the last train and tell all that it was his grandfather who built the railway but now anyhow given away by the Federal Government of which he has no control.

SINGAPORE said it would not be drawn into confirming or denying allegations that it was part of a US-led electronic spying network in Asia.

Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam said that Indonesia and Malaysia, which summoned Singapore’s envoys this week over reports that such a network exists, are aware that the city-state has no intention to harm relations.

“You cannot say this is five per cent true or 95% true, that we work with the Americans and Australians on this aspect of counter-terrorism but not this aspect,” he said in comments carried by The Straits Times website.

The ensuing back-and-forth on any Singapore statement on specific intelligence issues would be “never ending”, he said.

“The point is that the Indonesians and Malaysians know that we won’t do anything to harm their interests,” he said at a forum hosted by the newspaper yesterday.

Singapore, which considers itself a prime target of extremists, works closely with neighbours and Western countries against terrorism.

The comments were the first from a Singapore minister since the Sydney Morning Herald reported on Monday that Singapore and South Korea played key supporting roles in a “Five Eyes” intelligence network grouping the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Asked if the report would harm ties with Malaysia and Indonesia, Shanmugam, who is also the Law Minister, said it should not because “what we do is known to all of us”.

The report, based on leaks provided by fugitive former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, said Singapore capitalised on its status as a telecommunications hub to serve as an important link in tapping undersea cables for the network.

Singapore’s envoys to Malaysia and Indonesia were summoned by their host governments on Tuesday to clarify its alleged involvement in the spying operations.

Singapore is a long-standing military partner of the United States.

The US military operates a post in the city-state that assists in logistics and exercises for its forces in South-East Asia.

The US Navy maintains a logistical command unit — Commander, Logistics Group Western Pacific — in Singapore to coordinate warship deployment and logistics in the region.

Squadrons of US fighter planes are also rotated to Singapore for a month at a time, according to a report by the US Congressional Research Service. — AFP

who in their freaking minds would want to sniff deep packets up to layer seven within layers of tunnels, encapsulation and encryption on undersea cables which could carry hundreds of fiber strands, hundreds of lambdas per fiber pair, hundred gigabit per second per lambda, and terabit per second per vpn per client? plus storing every freaking meaningful byte indefinitely. snowden is smoking pot.
