Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Rajah has criticised the Workers' Party (WP) for not taking a clear position on the hijab issue.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, she said they may sound sympathetic but actually "straddle both sides of the fence and merely calls for public dialogue".
"This does little to help resolve a delicate and difficult national issue and runs the danger of encouraging groups, including those from other communities, to take rhetorical positions and make public demands which they may then find difficult to move from," she said.
She was critical of what the WP and National Solidarity Party, who both issued statements last week, said amid growing calls to let uniform officers and nurses don the tudung or hijab.

Why does the WP need to state a position at all? The WP is not the government.
Unless the PAP wants to let the WP run the country now, it shouldn't expect the other parties to do its work. Is the PAP government so bankrupt of ideas that it is begging for the opposition to help them out?

shadow cabinet concept
Unless there are sufficient Opposition MPs, say about 40 percent of the house, a shadow cabinet is pointless.
The PAP doesn't have a clue how to deal with this issue and is trying to fish for ideas from the Opposition.
The Opposition is there to oppose, not to help the government. If the PAP wants help, then it should invite the Opposition to form a coalition government.

Indranee failed to see being neutral in itself is also a position. If WP steers towards one side of the fence, PAP will in turn accuse WP of trying to score cheap political points and fail to see 2 sides of the coin. Either way it an issue that put PAP on the defence. Hence the need to counter attack opposition.
