A Ngee Ann Polytechnic student died yesterday (Sep 12), two weeks after he fell during cheerleading practice.

According to the Lianhe Wanbao, 19-year-old Lai Qing Xiang sustained injuries to his back after he slipped while performing a backflip on the evening of Aug 30.

He was rushed to the National University Hospital, where he spent two weeks in a coma.

Wanbao reported that his condition was erratic, but appeared to improve before taking a turn for the worse a few days later.

His elder sister Julin Lai posted on her Facebook page on Sep 1: "At least Qing Xiang is breathing on his own hope he will be stronger and get better fast."

However, the next day she posted that her brother was "not doing so well this morning" and urged friends to pray for him.

On Sep 3, she posted: "Qing Xiang's health so far is stable and there's improvement."

Ms Lai's last post on Sep 11 before he died was: "'Sleeping Beast', please wake up."

His funeral service was held at the Mount Vernon crematorium on Thursday evening.

According to The Straits Times, Lai's father had questioned why the 1.75m tall teenager who weighed 90kg was asked to do a backflip when he was a "tosser". A tosser is one who throws other cheerleaders into the air and catches them.

Always jovial, Lai was nicknamed "happy fruit". He had a keen interest in cheerleading and was described by friends as positive and energetic.

According to Wanbao, Lai was from the Institute of Technical Education before being accepted into Ngee Ann Polytechnic. His friends on Facebook had commented that Lai must have done well academically to be able to enter a polytechnic.

The Chinese daily also reported that Ngee Ann Polytechnic has since suspended all cheerleading activities pending an investigation into the incident. It added that a coach was present during the practice, and Lai was transported by ambulance to the hospital immediately following the accident. The polytechnic is also offering its assistance to the student's family and affected students and personnel.

1.75m at 90kg is quite huge and looking at his physique he does appear to carry a bit of bodyfat. Tossing others and carrying them shouldn't be a problem but i don't really think he himself is agile enough to do backflips and stuff.

What did I tell you about NUH and CGH? Two fucked up hospitals where those admitted into them already have a foot in the grave.

Seriously, if the ambulance driver insists on sending you or your loved one to either hospital, tell them to change hospital. If they refuse, point a gun at the ambulance driver's head. That'll persuade him.

The Poly's introduced last year a COMPULSORY module for students in the final year to exercise and take the NAFA test.

Problem is that students are not sent for check up first to determine their suitability to do the exercise (esp the 2.4km run)-which at least the SAF does. I also do not observe any first aid personnel or ambulance on standby during the test itself.

I urge parents of Poly students to question whether there are sufficient medical precautions taken to ensure their children can take the NAFA test and what safety procedures are in place during the test itself.
Do not wait for the first casualty to be your child.

Initially felt very sorry about this tragic case. Later I realised that he is 90kg in a normal frame of 1.7 m ie fat and yet tried to do a back flip ala american cheerleaders!!!!!
seriously , how come so many people without commonsense nowadays????? if you are fat, you are fat and prone to falls(let's not mince words here. fat is fat. period) you should at least have some insight and commonsense about your abilities. same for the coach, the other cheerleaders for not having commonsense, etc. some stupid excuse about it being routine??? diving is also a routine but if you are not a trained diver, a misstsep could literally snap your neck in half.
on the other hands you get alot of youngsters/brats being told how good or slim they are and fed all sorts of "positive" mantras/lies about everything is possible( sounds familiar like some sports company motto) or how everything is easy and achievable(just like american idiotic talk shows like oprah winfrey).
no wonder you see alot of people getting killed crossing roads, walking slowly as if hit proof, people falling on MRT tracks or escalators , driving like mad and blaming everybody when things go horribly wrong or divers usually sinkies getting killed(recent one hardly swims) in tioman. some or alot of things are wrong with the youngsters or people nowadays either too fat or no commonsense(ie stupid) or clumsy and yet arrogant doing things beyond their capabilities.(you see so many of these psychological masturbation shows where they tell you how good you are ala neuro lingiustic programming which is a con job aka psychological masturbation ).
BTW what is this new sports called cheerleading?? in the past you just go to the stadium and just yell your lungs out. Not some stupid americanisation routine which to me is pseudo sports. Cheerleading is for lechers who want to see pretty nubile girls in mini skirts. not some fat guy doing a backflip(how interesting can that get?). only tragedy would occur literally. some really stupid coach there. Pity the father

It is a dangerous sport for students, I recall Taiwan also had a university student who fell and died during cheerleading practice.

This guy is FAT.......how can he do backflip while being tossed in the air?

Don't think he can do backflip on the ground, what more in the air?

This shows clearly that there is no coaching and they are left on their own to do what they like.

Clearly the school MUST be held responsible for negligence.

While the boy is fucked dumb and devoid of common sense, this does not relieve the school of its responsibility to ensure
all training should be properly guided and ensure safety first.

I believe the boy must have signed an indemnity form to release the school of all responsibility, but then again, this is
a school program and hence the school must be responsible, no matter what indemnity form the student has signed, if negligence
is the cause of the fall, and not an accident.
