Their midweek Champions League draw with Bayern Munich defied the odds and will have lifted spirits on the back of victory over Aston Villa. But they will be desperate to avoid any more damaging headlines ahead of their trip to Bavaria next Wednesday.
Amazingly, the reigning champions have saved some of their better performances away from Old Trafford and have the best record on the road in the entire league. A fourth successive away win would be a timely tonic before they face their huge challenge in Germany, which is followed by David Moyes' first return to Everton.
In their search for consistency they could point to four league wins in their last six games but that masks the dark defeats at home to Liverpool and Manchester City.
If Newcastle can inflict an 11th league defeat on them this season it would go some away to lifting the ever dampening spirits on Tyneside. They are a team that have now lost nine of their last 14 matches and haven't scored in 10 of them.
Alan Pardew couldn't defend the criticism that came his team's way after last weekend's capitulation against Southampton and has made it clear he expects a reaction.
