WAYNE ROONEY was forced into a 22-hour, 11,922-mile round trip across the globe after being sent HOME from Manchester United’s Far East tour.

The England striker is now nearly 6,000 miles away from his United team-mates in Bangkok.

And, although the Premier League champions insist he has a hamstring injury, the distance between him and the club could be significant.

United released a statement insisting he would be sidelined for a month but bizarrely Rooney later appeared to contradict this by saying it was nothing to worry about. The Red Devils ace wrote on his Facebook page: “Gutted to have picked up a niggling injury especially as training was going so well. Heading back to Manchester to have it assessed fully but early indications are nothing to worry about.”

After just 16 hours in Thailand — and one training session — he was on his way to the airport to begin the 5,961-mile 11-hour journey home.

The timing triggered conspiracy theories, given it comes against the backdrop of uncertainty over his future.

United’s statement read: “Following a scan on a hamstring injury sustained in training, it’s been decided Wayne should return home immediately for further assessment. It’s anticipated he’ll be unavailable for a month.”

Despite new Old Trafford boss David Moyes declaring Rooney is not for sale, the player himself still has not pledged his future to the club.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are all monitoring the situation. And, ironically, Chelsea are due to arrive in Bangkok today.

United had, before sending him home, distributed a photo of Rooney laughing with Patrice Evra. The injury comes a day after Moyes said United staff had told him Rooney had returned for pre-season in his best shape for years.
