Bukit Chagar chosen as final transit terminal

JOHOR BARU: JOHOR has decided that the terminating station or last stop for the Rapid Transit System (RTS) from Singapore to be located at Bukit Chagar here.

The site, where the former Bukit Chagar flats were located, was deemed to be the top choice of the public from a list of four preferred locations polled during the Iskandar Malaysia Comprehensive Development Plan Open Day in September last year.

The other three candidates were
Tanjung Puteri, JB Sentral 1 and JB Sentral 2.

The Bukit Chagar RTS Terminal will have its own Customs and Immigration clearance facilities and will not be sharing with existing facilities at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building (SIB).

Speaking to the New Straits Times here, state Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said Johor had only a single proposal as to the location of the RTS terminal.

“It is now up to Singapore to list their choice as there is still no indication as to the final alignment of the RTS from a total of three options.

“I don’t know why the
republic is holding back,
knowing that the project will
benefit travellers from both sides
of the causeway.”

Singapore’s options of RTS alignment are to build it parallel to the causeway and above the ground; parallel to the causeway and underground; or diagonally opposite the causeway.

Whichever alignment is chosen, it is understood that the RTS from
Singapore is an extension of the republic’s Thomson Line which will have its northern most station to be located at Woodlands North.

In other words, once the 43km line is constructed, it will be linked directly to the Bukit Chagar RTS Terminal.

Meanwhile, Hasni said the location of the Bukit Chagar RTS Terminal would make the function of the CIQ Complex at the SIB more comprehensive.

This, he said, was because the terminal would be linked to the SIB.

“The site was chosen after many discussions and debates on its
long-term economic and social considerations.

“Moreover, the location has also turned out to be the most popular choice of the people during the poll.

“Land acquisition for the RTS project in Johor Baru has been completed and rail alignment at the Johor Baru side has also been decided.

“I believe Singapore will announce their alignment soon.”

People who bought developments near tanjong puteri or New York hotel will be very disappointed if this news is true.

Why so? Staying within walking distance to major hub is not desirable. It's beside sentral.

Look at the land area near Bukit Chagar...

Once they reach the station; they will go somewhere else.

So, it's going to be quite a lot of walking distance (about 1.5km) from Princess Cove. The site of the Bukit Chagar RTS station should then be the plot of land previously occupied by the few blocks of low cost flats, just before the CALTEX petrol kiosk (coming from Tebrau) next to JB Sentral. It is presently being used as a car park for cars and motorcycles.

Last stand: The flats will be demolished on April 15 to make way for the proposed Mass Rapid Transit project linking Johor Baru to Singapore.

This 17-storey structure, which is visible from across the causeway, will give way to the proposed Mass Rapid Transit project.
It was built in the 70s by the state to provide cheap housing for more than 2,000 households.
These households have been relocated to Taman Sri Stulang in Bakar Batu, approximately 3km away.
While the former residents are enjoying their new homes, trader Azmi Abdullah, 48, is still running a eatery near the flats with his wife Fadzillah Abdul Majid, 43.

Lone survivor: Azee Corner at the bottom of Block B is the only eatery that continues to operate.

The couple have been living here for a decade and are waiting to move to their new business premises.
Azmi said that food operators in Bukit Cagar were upset as they were yet to have proper sites to do business.
Today, instead of flat dwellers, scrap metal hunters frequent his stall for a meal or two.
Without water and electricity, Azmi has to close his shop earlier than before.
Idris Abdul, 60, who has been running a wiring service shop three doors away from Azmi's eatery, was uncertain about his future.

Not long to go: One of the four blocks which have been vacant for the past two months.

“How do they expect me to keep my things in such a small place, and this is my livelihood,” he lamented.
Another former resident, Sulaiman Samad, 34, who was at Azmi’s shop, said he preferred his new home compared to his Bukit Cagar flat which was very cramped.
However, the legal clerk at a firm in City Square Tower said that not everything was rosy at the new place because structural defects had started to show.
“The flats also leak, especially during rains, and water comes in through the windows as we are not allowed to install awnings by the developer,” said Sulaiman.
Those who were relocated should be allowed to purchase their homes instead of renting them, he added.

Taking stock: Scavengers loading metal pipes salvaged from the flats into a lorry.

“I hope that Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and Johor Baru MP Datuk Shahrir Samad can do something to improve the living standards of those starting a new life at Bakar Batu,” he said.

Bukit Chagar is one gigantic open car park, by 9am its all full.
Those 1,000 over car owners, mostly junior officers (senior officers have allotted parking lots in the complex) from the CIQ, will probably be cursing and swearing if the news is true - WHERE TO PARK MY CAR????

Will be good if they can build station underground and an indoor air con bus interchange with plenty of shops and makan joints above it like the Toa Payoh mrt station. Beside it, build one huge multi-storey carpark for 5,000 cars or more.
Possible? Is the land big enough? If can, the area around it sure super lively one with an underground pass with shops connecting to City Sq and new Komtar directly opp.
Also, Jln Wong Ah Fook will be cleared of the present congestion as buses park there now can move to the new interchange. Swee boh? Haha!

Why is it called the "final transit terminal", "terminating station" or "last stop" if there are only 2 terminals/stations/stops in the entire RTS link - ie. Bt Chagar and Woodlands North (the Thomson line is a separate line, although interchanging with RTS)? They can just call it the "JB station", no?

Aren't both these stations "final transit terminals", "terminating stations" or "last stops", depending on which direction you are heading?

Unless of course they intend the line to have more than these 2 stations - mebbe 2 stations on Johor soil itself? After all Bt Chagar is diagonally opposite from Woodlands North, not directly opposite. Could they be considering another station near where Vantage Bay is, which is more or less directly opposite from Woodlands North? Remember who is behind VB...

Doubt there will be 2 stations. Customs is planned for Bukit Chagar according to the interview.

Likely to have feeder buses like the condos in Singapore. Maybe there will be an integrated bus interchange too.

Imagine hopping onto MRT at any station in Singapore and enjoy seamless travel to Johor under rain or shine.

This is location I pick back in July 2013. I think the name JBCC station sound fit for the location.

I will believe there is a station at Danga Mall. That will be station I will be using in the future.

Your 'future' station could be 2035 or beyond. I think a more realistic immediate target is 2021 for RTS & 2025 for HSR.
