SINGAPORE: Wednesday is the annual Dragon Boat Festival and part of the celebrations includes eating rice dumplings.

Dumpling shop owners have much to celebrate too, as some said rice dumpling sales have increased up to 20 per cent, compared to previous years.

Shop owners said they saw a spike in dumpling orders this year, especially in the days leading up to the traditional Chinese festival.

Some were even able to sell as many as 3,000 dumplings within the past five days.

They said this was due to mass orders from hotels and more orders from foreigners.

Some businesses also said they had to raise dumpling prices slightly, because of a rise in ingredient prices.

Lim Cheng Wee, managing director at Eastern Rice Dumpling, said: “We encounter different customers from overseas. And secondly our old customers from restaurants, their quantity of orders is much more than last year. Last year they took about few hundred per order, this year they take in thousands. And some customers even stretch (their orders) over two to three weeks, continuing to take thousands of dumplings."
