Penang man attacked as violence hits Malaysian general election
Mr Chong Fu Chun (above), a 53-year-old hawker, had returned to his house on Penang island in the wee hours of April 15 and saw election campaign flags and banners outside.
He removed them since they had been put up without his consent.
But a group of men later allegedly beat the Malaysian man so badly that he fell into a coma. He suffered fractures on his cheeks and forehead, and had blood clots in his brain, for which he underwent two operations. Eight screws had to be fixed to his skull.
His was one of almost 400 cases of violence related to the upcoming Malaysian general election that have been reported to the police.
