It is more than cool factor. Using horses on patrol have several purposes: In crowd control for their mobile mass and height advantage and for crime prevention and high visibility policing roles.

With the added height and visibility, the horses allow the police to observe a wider area and also allows people in the wider area to see the officers, which helps deter crime and helps people find officers when they need them.

actually, it's quite cool to patrol on horses.

You may want to sound this out to the current CP. He is always awaiting good ideas to improve the SPF. Funding should not be a problem. Can always get them at low cost from S'pore Turf Club. Better that than to have more horse meat for sale, eh?

Separately, helicopter patrol is also cool. Was brought up in the past but then CP did not favour the idea. Claimed it was too cumbersome. Where to get the pilot, insurance involved etc. But if WKS was in favour, trust me, he would too.

Horses are good for mass gatherings and crowd control and is said that horses are more effective than 10 policemen doing crowd control. Unfortunately we have a law that prevents more than 5 people gathering so little opportunity to use the horses. The carrying cost is very high. Helicopter is also the same - no opportunity to use them.We can always use the RSAF helis.

Horses and Helis however are great recruitment and image assets.

if you know anything about horses, sg is too hot and humid for equine patrol. race horses can do sprints and gallops at the race track, but after that, they need shade and cooling fast to last their lifespan. in the crowded urban settings in sg, they get easily spooked when closely surrounded with humans who don't know how to react to them. and they can kick suddenly in the worst situation. a few cops where i live got thrown off when the horses spooked, and they suffered neck injuries. they're great for small town and more sparsely populated cities, but not the urban jungle, hot and humid weather, and dangerous crazy roads (and drivers) of sg.

There a very serious weakness in horse patrol. No it not the horse manure but the rider is very expose when kenna attack from the left. And the horse never charge when encounter anything at it chest level. If protesters have half a brain, can easily pull down a rider.

My only knowledge on horses is horse racing at the Turf Club, from Bukit Timah to Kranji and races in Penang, Ipoh and KL and losing a small fortune to the bookies.

No need to get the angmo style chargers which are bigger, asian countries shd use themongolian ponies, more hardly and can withstand 40 degree summer and they smaller in size so shd suit asian mata size.

Anyway, it a lousy idea as it take time to train both the cavelrymen and the horses. Then mata need to hire vets, mafus, ferrier, walkers etc etc just to take care of the horses. All cost $$.

without the arabian, mustang or some german crossbreed, it will be very hard for mata to impress with a pony.

yes, expensive with stables, grooming, feed, medication, vets, land. not wise for sg to follow the west.

Horse regularly patrol heavily populated cities such as London and US. They are trained to handle crowds, sound of gunfire etc. They are primarily used for crowd control and these are in cities. In full gear, horses wear visors and certain level of protection.

Horses can handle a wide range of temperature. At Kranji they do not train and race in airconditoned settings.

The modern thoroughbred comes from the Arabian which is a desert horse

The huge Police Grays used by many first world countries Police Forces operate in summer where the temperature in places like Australia where temp goes way past 30C.

Honestly, I don't see any major problem involved. They are already feeding so many useless and chobolan chaps. A few more won't make a difference. About time the SPF spend some money on animals instead of useless human beings. Horses, trained well, can be equally obedient and compliant. Don't you agree?
