Seven more H7N9 bird flu cases reported in China

Chinese health authorities say the H7N9 strain of bird flu has spread to several provinces in the country as seven new cases of the infection have been discovered.

On Friday, medical personnel in the southeastern province of Fujian said a 65-year-old man was confirmed to have contracted the virus.

He showed symptoms of repeated coughing, low fever and a tight chest on April 18. He tested positive for the H7N9 virus following a diagnosis by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday morning.

On Thursday, the eastern province of Jiangxi confirmed its first human case of H7N9 avian influenza in a 69-year-old-man. Health authorities later confirmed the province's second H7N9 case in a 76-year-old woman. The elderly woman is in critical condition.

Also, three men, aged 36, 49 and 60, were reported to have caught H7N9 bird flu in Jiangsu province. Two of the men are in serious condition.

In neighboring Zhejiang province, a 38-year-old farmer was confirmed to have contracted the H7N9 bird flu virus. The man is in critical condition, and receiving medical treatment in hospital.

A visiting team from the World Health Organization (WHO), which wrapped up a week-long visit to China on April 24, said there had been no human-to-human transmission, but warned H7N9 was "one of the most lethal" influenza viruses seen so far.

More than 110 people in China have been infected by the H7N9 avian influenza, with 23 deaths. China officially confirmed the occurrence of human infection with the new bird flu virus on March 31.

The H7N9 bird flu virus is distinct from the H5N1 virus. Since 2003, the H5N1 strain has caused more than 360 confirmed human deaths and tens of millions of birds have died from the virus.

China H7N9 Bird Flu Cases Rise By Five; Four Provinces Report Illnesses In One Day

The number of confirmed H7N9 bird flu cases in mainland China rose by five on Sunday, the country’s official Xinhua news agency reported. Four provinces — Zhejiang, Shandong, Jiangxi and Fujian — reported illnesses, the agency said.

Xinhua didn’t provide a total number of cases.

Based on a figure of 120 mainland cases as of Saturday at 7 p.m. Beijing time reported by China National Radio, the total number of cases would be 125. The number of dead is 23, according to a report in today’s Shanghai Daily.

The disease has spread from eastern China both northward and southward, leading to the closure of a growing number of markets where live chicken is sold as a preventative measure. The new, deadly disease has mostly struck people that have come into contact with chicken. There has also been occasional human-to-human transmission, according to the World Health Organization.
“Countermeasures have been effective so far, but the situation is still developing as new cases turn up,” Premier Li Keqiang said yesterday at a visit to the Chinese Center for Disease Control in Beijing.
The center has halted the publication of English-language figures about the spread of the disease since last Thursday. It didn’t give a reason.
Consumers have been wary of chicken, even though the government says cooked meat is safe. Yum!, the U.S. operator of the KFC fried chicken chain that has relied on China for much of its growth in recent years, has been hit with a decline in KFC sales in the country.
The spread of the disease in Zhejiang Province is expected to come under control due to the closure of wet markets and warmer weather, Xinhua said in a report, citing a doctor at Zhejiang University.
China’s financial markets are closed until Thursday in connect with the May Day holiday.

China reports 24th death from H7N9 bird flu

The deadly H7N9 bird flu strain claimed a new victim on Monday when a hospital patient died in China, state media reported, bringing the death toll from the recently identified virus to 24.BEIJING: The deadly H7N9 bird flu strain claimed a new victim on Monday when a hospital patient died in China, state media reported, bringing the death toll from the recently identified virus to 24.

A patient surnamed Chen died in the eastern city of Shanghai after 12 days of medical treatment failed, Xinhua news agency said. China has recorded more than 120 cases of H7N9 infection so far.
Most cases since the new strain was first identified in late March have been confined to eastern China, and the only one reported outside mainland China has been in Taiwan. The Taiwanese victim was infected in China.
But experts fear the possibility of the virus mutating into a form easily transmissible between humans, with the potential to trigger a pandemic.
The World Health Organisation has said there has been no evidence so far of human-to-human transmission but warned that H7N9 was "one of the most lethal" influenza viruses ever seen.
Chinese researchers, reporting in The Lancet on Thursday, said they had confirmed poultry as a source of the virus among humans.
Chinese health officials have acknowledged so-called "family clusters", where members of a single family have become infected, but have not established any confirmed instances of human-to-human transmission.
Most of the cases reported have not yet resulted in death, and some patients been discharged from hospital after apparently recovering.

China Reports More H7N9 Bird Flu Illnesses, Deaths

Another two people have died in China in connection with from H7N9 bird flu, bringing the total number of deaths to 26 as of May 1 at 4 p.m. Beijing time, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
The number of confirmed H7N9 bird flu cases in the mainland rose to 127, the agency said. That compares with a figure of 125 reported in state media earlier this week, and, according to Xinhua, is an increase of 19 confirmed new cases since April 24. Twenty-six people have recovered from the deadly new disease.
The eastern China region where the outbreak first occurred still has the most cases. Zhejiang Province, whose capital Hangzhou is one of China’s most scenic spots, has alone had 46, the most among the 10 cities and provinces that have reported illnesses. Shanghai has had 13 deaths, more than any other location.
