PUTRAJAYA - Police arrested three students, who held a protest outside the prime minister's official residence here last night, for failing to comply with instructions to disperse from the area.

District Deputy Chief Superintendent Mak Pak Chuai said the students, believed to be in their 20s, with a group of other students, refused to leave after being warned and despite being given the chance to speak for 10 minutes.

"They all came about 6pm, apparently to send a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak concerning education.

"We gave them time to speak without using a microphone, but they insisted on using a loud hailer.

"We were obliged to take action after establishing that they were disrupting public peace and detained three students about an hour later for questioning."

About 100 students had gathered in front of the official residence, demanding the abolishment of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans and demanding free education. The students, who arrived by cars and motorcycles, left about 7.30pm after police ordered them to disperse.

Mak said such incidents should not happen, especially in front of the prime minister's official residence during the weekend because such memorandums could be sent directly to the PM's office on a weekday.
