Question: You decided recently to allow gambling in Singapore. Has this been a boost for the economy?

Answer: For a long time, we fought in principle against casinos. Finally, we were persuaded it's big business and if we were not in it, someone else would. It was becoming increasingly difficult to shield our people from gambling. We can't be the nanny. Economically, it has worked out very well. The social impact - we'll have to wait a few more years to see.

Oddly, why cant the social impact be studied from close by countries that have casinos? Macau? Malaysia? Australia?

Anyway, for the economy wise, the casinos have to be there to generate the cash flow for SG else the wheel will stop spinning, so to speak. The pain will be felt on the social side. U win some u lose some. Just where to lose.
