WHEN Madam Shunmuga Kirthika was admitted to hospital with a fever, she was pregnant with twin boys. Within two days, she lost both of her unborn sons – along with her legs and all but one of her fingers.

Now, the 40-year-old is taking the hospital to court for alleged negligence. Madam Kirthika suffered three heart attacks after being admitted to intensive care at the National University Hospital (NUH).

She claims she did not receive adequate treatment after the first attack, which led to two more in the space of an hour.

The patient also alleges that her limbs showed signs of infection and poor circulation, but medics failed to respond promptly enough to prevent her legs and fingers from being amputated.

But the hospital is denying the claims, saying that she was already “very ill” when she was admitted in August 2009.
Madam Kirthika was 20 weeks’ pregnant when she arrived at the emergency department and was suffering from a fever, sore throat and running nose.

The Indian national was diagnosed with a life-threatening bacterial infection in the urinary tract, according to defence papers filed by the hospital’s lawyer Kuah Boon Theng. This was complicated by multi-organ failure, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, severe septic shock and acute kidney injury.

“She was admitted directly to the intensive care unit (ICU),” a spokesman for the hospital said yesterday. “Given her very ill state, she was intubated for respiratory support while in the ICU.

“Despite the aggressive treatment, she collapsed three times within an hour while in the ICU. The medical team successfully resuscitated her on each of the three occasions.”

However, she suffered complications from the illness, which caused her to miscarry and develop the gangrene that led to her legs and fingers being removed.

The hospital said in defence papers that the amputations were needed to bring her infection under control, and not doing so would have carried serious risks.

It added that the mortality rate for patients with her condition was at least 60 per cent. Madam Kirthika, who was an assistant nurse at Tan Tock Seng Hospital at the time of her illness, is seeking compensation for pain and suffering, medical costs, future expenses and loss of earnings, according to court papers.

Damages in High Court suits begin at $250,000. Her lawyer, Mr S. Palaniappan, is seeking more details of her treatment from the hospital in the run-up to the hearing.

NUH also wants her to provide details of her allegations so it can address them in a specific manner. A pre-trial conference is due next week.

Madam Kirthika, who is wheelchair-bound, has since returned to her hometown in Coimbatore, near Madras. She is being looked after by her parents and in-laws.

Funny that although she works as a nursing assistant in Tan Tock Seng she chose to go to NUH for treatment:confused:

Wow I'm impressed with NUH. It actually managed to save one out of two boys. Two shots on goal, one goal scored. Not bad.

Cheapskate Ah Neh, should have gone to KK or another hospital which has a better gynaecology department.

Singapore doctors and hospitals are going to get HELL from the VIP patients and other FT patients too. That is one of the reasons why many are practising DEFENSIVE MEDICINE and this is also one of the reasons why medical cost is escalating and getting higher and higher...and higher with a higher rate of medical-legal cases.

Doctors are now very afraid of missing any dreadful or fatal illnesses. So they will have to cover themselves adequately and perform all the tests necessary. They will just follow the hospital management protocol and patient will have to pay dearly for it. Needless to say doctors will also have to pay more for their medical insurance premiums too.

So better keep yourself healthy and practise PREVENTIVE MEDICINE ....equip yourself when you need to see a doctor and prepare yourself should you need to be hospitalised for some medical problem. Medical mishap is one of the leading, if not the leading, causes of mortality around the world!!!

Quite a sad and interesting case. I wonder where the negligence occurred as septicaemia and gangrene would take a while to set in and certainly before her admission. And the article seem to suggest that amputations were pretty much done shortly after admission to save her life.

get a lawyer, sow some adverse publicity, intimidate the hospital staff and doctors, threaten to sue for millions - an amicable settlement out of court.....a win win situation for the patient....that's the way to go if you want to harass the medical top dogs....

not so simple. you musrt be living under a coconut shell as doctors are not so stupid like you to get intimidated by some clown or adverse publicity. they want expert opinion and not your layman cr@p stuff. as usual some sinkies always think so easy to sue but lawyers usually do not tell you the fine prints if lose(after all they win and get paid whether they win or lose the case). I heard of a case where patient sued but lost the case and made to pay the legal fees for both sides including overseas expert witnesses which amount to a miillionn dolars. unable to pay and made bankrupt after that. This case is typical of some ungrateful idiot who got sick because of infectio0n and trying to blame doctors for her own poor health. obviously would lose and that's why she ran back to INdia so as to escape any liability if she lose the case. real crap.
