KUALA LUMPUR - The man who gave the nation its first inkling that not all was right in the government's investigation of the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case has died at age 53.

Private investigator P Balasubramaniam, a former member of the Malaysian police force, died on Friday of a heart attack a week after returning home from the hospital where he had gone to seek treatment.

“His body has been taken to the Sungai Buloh hospital,” Americk Sidhu, the lawyer who drafted Bala's astonishing first statutory declaration, confirmed.

According to Americk, Bala wife had called for an ambulance when he suffered what appeared to be a heart attack in his house. But the ambulance came too late.

“It was very unexpected. I’m devastated. I think he’s probably one of the best Malaysians we had,” Malaysian Insider reported Americk as saying.

Americk's tribute to the man he worked for months with when drafting the first SD was spontaneous and generous. Even so, it may not be enough for the courage and indomitable spirit displayed by Bala far exceeds whatever failings he has been accused of by his critics.

How many people - man or woman, young or old - would dare stand up against an entire and entrenched political system, daring to reveal how it may been that Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor were involved in a murder most foul.

"It is sad but we must continue to pursue justice. Bala was determined to seek the truth in the Altantuya case. We must should not let his efforts go in vain. For sure, the case will not stop here," PKR MP for Batu Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

Deepak Jaikishan, who had allegedly and controversially funded Bala's stay in Chennai where Bala and his family had fled to in the wake of the damning SD against Najib was in shock.

"Please send my deepest condolences to Bala's family," was all that the usually chatty Deepak would say when contacted by Malaysia Chronicle.
