Dr Todd’s family: Singapore Police ‘repeatedly lied’ to us

Dr Shane Todd died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore.

According to a media interview with The Washington Times [Link], the family of the late U.S. engineer, Dr Shane Todd, said that their son did not commit suicide but was murdered. He died under mysterious circumstances at his apartment in Singapore in June last year. He was found hanging from a bathroom door.

The Singapore Police believed that he committed suicide. However, his family said he had defensive wounds on his body and hands and had tried unsuccessfully to slip his fingers under a garrote that had been wrapped tightly around his neck to end his life. His mother, Mary, said her son “put up quite a fight”.

“His knuckles were bruised. You could see by his fingers that he had tried to slip them under the wire that was around his neck. He had obvious defensive wounds,” Mary Todd told The Washington Times on Wed (6 Mar). There was also a bruise on his forehead that indicated he had been “head-butted.”

Her son’s body was returned home and the family had hired a U.S. pathologist, Dr Edward Adelstein, to perform an autopsy review on the body. Dr Adelstein, chief of pathology at the Harry Truman Veterans Hospital in Missouri, said in his report that marks and bruises on Dr Todd’s throat, forehead, neck and hands indicated that he died after a struggle.

Mary Todd added that her son was being threatened and pressured to compromise U.S. security. Dr Todd reportedly was involved in research for his employer, the Institute for Microelectronics (IME), and a Huawei Technologies, a Chinese firm said to have close links with China’s military and intelligence. He was said to be involved in gallium nitride research, a semiconductor material which has uses in both civilian and military technology.

Dr Todd’s father, Rick Todd said that the family was in touch with him every week. According to the father, Dr Todd told the family that if they did not hear from him, they were to contact the U.S. Embassy immediately.

The family also recovered a computer hard drive from their son’s apartment in Singapore when they went there to pack his belongings. Rick Todd said an analysis of the hard drive raised more questions about his son’s death, noting that it showed that someone tried to access the computer after his son’s body was discovered.

The hard drive also contained numerous references to a project with Huawei. However, in a letter published on ST Forum on 23 Feb, A*Star (which IME comes under) Managing Director, Raj Thampuran said that there were “discussions but no project ensued between IME and Huawei on amplifiers”, notwithstanding the “unfortunate consequences arising from the speculative media reports”.

Rick Todd said the family will turn over the hard drive to the Singapore Police if the FBI is also involved in the investigation. “We need there to be independent oversight (of the Singaporean police investigation) by an agency that we have confidence in,” Rick Todd said, adding that police in Singapore “repeatedly lied” to the family about the circumstances of Shane’s death and about the progress of their investigation.

In a statement, the Singaporean Embassy in the U.S. extended its “deepest condolences to the Todd family,” adding that the investigation that began with the Todd death in June is “still ongoing and the Singapore Police will pursue every lead and examine the different angles thoroughly.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, has been informed of Dr Todd’s death by Senator Max Baucus of Montana, the home state of Todd’s family.
