58-year-old arrested for 10 suspected break-ins

SINGAPORE - A 58-year-old man has been arrested for suspected involvement in at least 10 break-ins in HDB residential units in the East.
The police received a spate of break-ins reported in Geylang East, Aljunied Crescent and Ubi Avenue 1 since the start of the year.
The man would target units on the lower floors with corridor windows fixed with aluminium grilles. He would enter the unit by prying open the window and pulling out the window grilles. Then, he would ransack for the apartment unit for valuables such as cash and jewellery.
Officers from Bedok Police Division managed to establish the suspect's identity after conducting ground investigations and extensive enquiries.
With the assistance from officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau, the 58-year-old was successfully apprehended on Feb 6.
If convicted, he could face a jail term up to 10 years, and be liable to caning.
In a police statement, police advised the public ito adopt the following measures to guard their homes against break-ins:
- Ensure that all doors, windows and other openings are well secured with strong grilles and good quality locks;
- Consider installing a burglar alarm;
- Keep large sums of cash in banks and expensive jewellery in a safe deposit box; and
- If going away for a prolonged period, suspend the newspaper subscription, inform your Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) of your absence.
