Opposition veteran and former Potong Pasir MP Chiam See Tong has weighed in on the population White Paper in an online video put up on Wednesday.

Like many other critics, he said he was “appalled” at the projections that Singapore’s population could hit 6.9 million by 2030.
The Singapore People’s Party chief said the “huge figure” surpasses the population of Scandinavian countries and will put tremendous pressure on Singapore’s infrastructure - especially housing - in the future.

“That is the day when Singaporeans will suffer the pressure of high population, truly high population in Singapore,” said Mr Chiam of the 2030 projection.

He criticised the Government for pursuing a “growth at all costs” policy since Singapore’s independence and bringing in foreign workers who took away jobs from Singaporeans.

“You may ask what is the solution. I think the best solution is to open the doors for more Singaporeans to give more of their ideas. Singapore is purportedly a democratic country. For that purpose, we have to invite more Singaporeans to join the opposition so they can give more ideas to the government,” said Mr Chiam.

“I'm sure when you open the flood gates, many many more Singaporeans will come forward with brilliant ideas and the problems can be solved easily,” he said.

It is truly a sad sight to see the great Mr Chiam in such a physical condition.
I could not bear to watch beyond the first 20 seconds. :o

Re: No One

Its very heart-wrenching to hear a frail Mr Chiam calling Singaporeans to come forward in joining opposition parties like his SPP to assist in making life better for all Singaporeans.

Fast reverse to the days when Chiam was the same man who appeared as an independent candidate and later formed the SDA and the SPP. He took the first step forward despite his earlier setbacks.

He persevered and managed to bull-dozed into a predominantly PAP Parliament with the great and brave people of Potong Pasir behind him.

I will always remember him as a MP, along with LTK, who both had to sit under void-decks (with a few truly dedicated helpers) to serve the people during the MPS, in comparison to the PAP MPs and their retinue of "dedicated volunteers" to help out in comfortable offices.

Anyway, Mr Chiam and fellow Singaporeans have to thanks the PAP for treating opposition members (representatives of the people of Singapore) in such a despicable and low-class manner. Such behaviour only endeared them more to the people of the whole of Singapore.

Sometimes, the Divine intervenes and cause the cruelty inflicted upon others to back-fire. Karma comes in many forms. Those afflicted by "bad karmas" will be much better off today, ONLY if THEY ADMIT to their past mistakes or follies.

A bird cannot "look down upon Mother Earth" for it cannot be air-borne forever and has to come down to terra-firma soon to rest. This is the basic truth.

Sadly, sheer arrogance and lack of human touch in certain people "possessing" immense powers have somewhat distracted these people from the true path and onto a dangerous path.

Abuse of power cannot be forgiven. Just look at the French Revolution of yesteryears and the recent Arab Spring. The Marcos-era, the days of Shahenshah Reza Pahlavi and Shabanou Farah Diba of Iran, the fall from power of once mighty Suharto of Indonesia, the rise of Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma and the anger among the poor Chinese masses in China. All this are signs of trouble to come.

The images of a fleeing fatty out-of-shape Baby Doc Duvalier of Haiti led to the lynching of commanders and men of his infamous Ton-Ton Macoute (secret-police).

The disintegration of Josep Tito's Yugoslavia, the break-up of the mighty Soviet Union and the birth of many new nations and the fall from grace of Gadaffi and corrupt and despotic Mubaruk are cases in point.

Singaporeans should heed the advice of Poor Chiam and join the opposition in droves to establish true democracy in Singapore.

I call upon all opposition parties, especially the WP, to kindly refrain from projecting yourself as a "sikit-atas" party.

Please learn from the PAP. It started off as a true peasant party but became an exclusive one filled with arrogance and lack of respect for the very people that brought it up. See the price the PAP is paying today.

This is your country. There is nothing to fear. Stand up, get elected and work for the people that supported you.
