Workers' Party raising $1.5m for new HQ

The Workers' Party (WP) is raising funds for new, bigger party headquarters as its existing premises are getting too small.
The goal is to raise $1.5 million, a sum that will go towards making the down payment for a new premise, announced party leaders Low Thia Khiang and Sylvia Lim on Sunday after performing at Bricks In Blue, the WP's first-ever variety show.
The show, put up to thank supporters and constituents, is also part of the party's fund-raising efforts.
Mr Low said the current HQ leased by the party at Syed Alwi Road was too cramped during the 2011 General Election.

Asst Prof Eugene Tan expects two-horse race in by-election
By Alice Chia | Posted: 16 January 2013 1846 hrs

Assistant Professor Eugene Tan

SINGAPORE: Despite the four-cornered fight in the Punggol East by-election, Assistant Professor Eugene Tan feels that it will ultimately boil down to a two-horse race between the People's Action Party and the Workers' Party.

Asst Prof Tan, who is also a Nominated MP, said: "Depending on how well the opposition supporters support Workers' Party, we could see the Reform Party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) performing poorly, and I won't exclude the possibility that they could also lose their electoral deposits, as opposition voters try to pool their support behind who they regard as being the best opposition candidate in Punggol East."

He also commented on the election strategies that the parties are likely to adopt.

Asst Prof Tan said: "I think the Workers' Party will campaign essentially on the strategy that you need more opposition MPs. They will certainly try to take credit for the changes in policies that the government has rolled out since May 2011, as suggesting that this indicates that a stronger opposition presence is actually a win-win situation for Singaporeans."

He added: "I think they will, on their part, have to show how a ninth MP from the Workers' Party will actually make a qualitative difference. They already have eight MPs - six elected and two Non-Constituency MPs. The question is, will a ninth make a difference?

"And I think this is where the Reform Party and the SDA will try to leverage on, to say that well, you know, it is good for there to be stronger opposition presence but do you want the same opposition presence or can we have another voice?"

Asst Prof Tan said the PAP will probably face the biggest challenge.

"They would have to show that voters should keep faith with them and that "having the 81st MP in Dr Koh will actually make a difference to the voters in Punggol East," he said.

Got back from Punggol East not too long ago. Would like to thank all volunteers who helped tirelessly with flyers distribution in the afternoon.

I started my campaign today by going around the houses I didn't get to personally visit in the last General Elections and was pleasantly surprised to meet my Sec Sch teachers, Mr and Mrs Chew, who I last saw on their wedding. I remember making a signature book using big pieces of vanguard and was pleasantly shocked to find out that they framed it and hanged it on their wall!

I wonder which of us was more excited at that point, especially when they found out that the very same creator of the wall decor 18 years ago now wants to speak for them in Parliament!

The Workers' Party's Lee Li Lian calls for more feeder buses at Punggol East, saying there aren't enough buses to support the population, a problem for people going to work. She adds that she will be starting her block visits at the 40% of blocks she did not cover personally in the 2011 GE.

[h=1]2013-01-16 Day 1 Campaign[/h]Updated <abbr title="Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 8:30am" data-utime="1358382635" class="timestamp">3 hours ago</abbr>

Immediately after nomination closed at North Vista Secondary School, WP volunteers fanned out to all precincts in Punggol East to distribute flyers containing Li Lian's message to residents.

Li Lian proceeded to meet residents at Rivervale Plaza and commenced with door-to-door house visits, starting with the blocks that she was not able to visit during GE2011. Several residents were anticipating her visit as they remember her from GE2011 and are looking forward to have another Workers' Party representative in Parliament.

In the evening, Li Lian continued with house visits after a quick dinner with some WP volunteers. The team was encouraged by the warm support shown by many Punggol East residents. Two Punggol East residents Li Lian managed to catch up with are Mr and Mrs Chew. Mrs Chew was Li Lian''s former science teacher in secondary school who is proud of her former student!
