Lee Li Lian is WP's choice for Punggol East

Updated 01:49 PM Jan 14, 2013

SINGAPORE - The Workers' Party this morning unveiled Ms Lee Li Lian, 34, as their candidate in the upcoming Punggol East by-election.

The party's deputy webmaster was also a candidate in the 2011 General Election, in which she took about 41 per cent of the vote in a three-way fight, but lost to PAP candidate Michael Palmer, who has since resigned following his admission of an extramarital affair.

WP Chairman Sylvia Lim, introducing the candidate at a press conference at the party headquarters this morning, said: "Li Lian pounded the ground in 2011 and the area hasn't changed that much since. We picked Lee Li Lian because of her prior experience in the ward, and her personal attributes. Over these years, we have found Lee Li Lian to be a sincere, reliable and committed person."

Like People's Action Party candidate Koh Poh Koon, Ms Lee said her campaign strategy was to focus on the people's needs - "that's what politics is about," she said - citing the availability of amenities such as nearby coffeeshops and childcare centres as issues she would focus on.

In particular, she said that "as someone thinking of starting a new family I can empathise with young families". She later clarified that she is not pregnant, but added that she "doesn't see how politics should affect a person's decision to start a family".

Responding to a media query on why the party had not been seen pounding the ground in Punggol East following the 2011 GE, Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang said: "WP is a small party, so we shifted our priority to serving Aljunied GRC after the elections. So we ceased ground activities to focus on Aljunied.

"Our original plan was to cease on-ground activities for one year to let Aljunied stabilise, and restart activities in January 2013."

On what message the WP was sending out with their choice of candidate for the by-election, Mr Low said: "WP is a serious party. We consider very carefully what candidate to field. We look for consistency and look at their track record.

"We also make sure that the candidates are willing to work the ground, not just in Parliament but also in Town Councils."

Ms Lee, Ms Lim and Mr Low did not comment on the Singapore Democratic Party, who are likely to run in the by-election, or former Speaker Palmer.

MP Sylvia Lim introduces Lee Li Lian as Candidate for Punggol East By-Election

INTRODUCTION OF CANDIDATE FOR
PUNGGOL EAST BY-ELECTION 2012

Thank you for coming.
Today it’s my pleasure to introduce WP’s candidate for Punggol East. She actually requires little introduction to the Punggol East residents, as she contested there as our candidate in GE 2011.

Lee Li Lian grew up in Lorong Lew Lian and later moved to the Buangkok area where her parents still live. She attended Holy Innocents High School and then went on to do Business Studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

After Li Lian completed her polytechnic studies, she obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Curtin University of Technology, majoring in Marketing. She has about 10 years’ experience is in the finance and insurance industry, and is now an in-house trainer with a financial institution.

Li Lian has been in Workers’ Party for the last 6 years. During this time, she has shown her leadership qualities and drive. She was quickly elected by our cadre members into our Executive Council or CEC 2 years later, and re-elected into the party leadership ever since then. She has held various posts in the party including President of the WP Youth Wing, Deputy Treasurer and now Deputy Webmaster. After WP won Aljunied GRC in 2011, Li Lian has been serving as MP Pritam Singh’s Legislative Assistant, managing his Meet the People sessions and ground activities.

Over these years, we have found Li Lian to be a sincere, reliable and committed person, a team player with a heart for the people. One of her great strengths is that she is able to connect and empathise with people from diverse ages and backgrounds. She is also passionate about various issues, which she will tell you more about herself.

The party believes Li Lian is the best candidate to represent WP at this by-election. She has some understanding of the ground from her previous campaign there, and will work tirelessly to serve the residents of Punggol East. On a personal note, I certainly look forward to the prospect of more elected women in the House.

I shall now pass the floor to Li Lian, who will address you and the residents of Punggol East.

Punggol East by-election candidates to file nomination papers Wednesday
By S Ramesh | Posted: 16 January 2013 0550 hrs

SINGAPORE: Candidates participating in the Punggol East by-election will file their nomination papers at North Vista Secondary School, the by-election's nomination centre, on Wednesday from 11am to 12pm.

With this, Singapore would go through its second by-election just eight months after the last was held in the single member constituency (SMC) of Hougang. The Hougang by-election took place in May 2012.

Punggol East SMC fell vacant after former Speaker of Parliament and MP for the ward Michael Palmer resigned on 10 December 2012 due to an extramarital affair.

Under parliamentary election procedures, one hour is set aside for the filing of nomination papers and another half hour for any objections to be raised.

The Returning Officer, Mr Yam Ah Mee, is expected to declare the results of the nomination process by 1pm Wednesday.

The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) would be fielding 40-year-old Dr Koh Poh Koon, a surgeon, as its candidate.

The Workers' Party, on the other hand, has announced that 34-year-old Lee Li Lian would be fielded again. Ms Lee, a trainer at a financial institution, contested the ward in the 2011 General Election.

Two other opposition candidates have also stated their interest to contest the ward.

They are secretary-general of the Reform Party Kenneth Jeyaretnam and secretary-general of the Singapore Democratic Alliance Desmond Lim. Mr Lim also took part in the 2011 polls in Punggol East.

The Singapore Democratic Party however has decided to withdraw from the contest, just a day before Nomination Day, despite expressing interest to participate in the by-election early on.

Separately, the Elections Department announced on Tuesday that it has issued 14 Political Donation Certificates, one of the documents which have to be submitted when filing the Nomination Papers.

Each candidate would also have to pay an election deposit of S$14,500.

Nine days of campaigning have been set aside with Friday, 25 January, designated as Cooling Off Day.

Candidates have indicated that they would be raising several issues concerning the needs of the Punggol East ward during their campaign period.

There are some 32,000 voters in Punggol East SMC and Polling Day has been set for 26 January, a Saturday.

PAP won the ward in the 2011 General Election, garnering nearly 54 per cent of the votes cast.
