The Ministry of Education has replaced the principal of River Valley High School after he was called by the Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau (CPIB) to assist in investigations.

Mr Steven Koh Yong Chiah will be redeployed to the Ministry's HQ as Principal (Special Projects), said MOE in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The ministry and the CPIB declined to provide more details, citing ongoing investigations.

Mrs Teo Khin Hiang will be the new principal of River Valley High, said the ministry.

In a statement today (19 Dec), MOE said that Mr Steven Koh Yong Chiah, Principal of River Valley High School, is currently assisting the Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau (CPIB) in its investigation.
MOE said that it was informed by the CPIB that Mr Koh is “assisting the CPIB in its investigation” and as such, it will be re-deploying Mr Koh to the MOE HQ as Principal (Special Projects).
The ministry said it is unable to comment further on the case as investigations are on-going.
Mrs Teo Khin Hiang will be replacing Mr Koh, effective tomorrow (20 Dec).
She was the deputy director of the Programme Coordination Office in MOE HQ, and previously the principal of the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the Arts (STAR).
Prior to her stint at STAR, she had held appointments as cluster superintendent and principal of three schools – Chua Chu Kang Secondary, Pasir Ris Crest Secondary and Commonwealth Secondary.
Commenting on the new appointment, MOE said, “MOE will work closely with Mrs Teo and her team at River Valley High School to ensure that school activities and programmes continue to be carried out smoothly, in the best interests of the students”.
In Apr this year, Lee Lip Hong, the former principal of Pei Chun Public School was charged with seeking sexual services from an underage prostitute. He pleaded guilty.
Another former principal, Anthony Tan Kim Hock of Maris Stella High School is currently on trial. He has been charged with misappropriating nearly $150,000. He is accused of committing the offence in the school on 21 separate occasions between 2004 and 2009.

* “Assisting in an investigation” is the normal officially-correct/nice way of saying someone is being investigated and is a person of interest.

My guess is that he could have received some extra favors in awarding tenders to Ipad2 retailers. I remembered he made it compulsory for his secondary school students to purchase an iPad2 for educational purposes.

The principal of a prestigious school is assisting the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau with investigations, the Ministry of Education (MOE) revealed in a statement yesterday.

River Valley High School principal, Mr Steven Koh Yong Chiah, has been re-deployed to MOE headquarters as Principal (Special Projects).

It is unclear what the investigations are about.

Mr Koh’s former colleagues painted a divisive picture of a man who has spent over 30 years in the education service, while former students in schools he led shared one sentiment: He was a strict principal who brooked no nonsense.
