Bernard and I joined the Workers’ Party about the same time, and we both started off as fellow Executive Council members of the Workers’ Party Youth Wing. Throughout the years, we spent lots of time together, both working in our various roles within WP, and more importantly as friends and buddies. Our late night conversations on politics, life and everything bonded us and we share common values and the common goal to help in our own small way to make Singapore a better place for ourselves and people we love. Jiaxi, jiayou!

Our Workers' Party volunteers are the backbone of our party. They make things possible. They come from all walks of life. They are of all ages. Pictured below is my team's oldest and youngest volunteers, Simon and Seraphin, both Bedok residents. It is so heartening to see them walking tirelessly together from flat to flat, block to block. Walking with them and other volunteers has been truly inspiring. The laughter we share also help us to forget our fatigue.

In this GE 2015, three generations of WP volunteers are walking the ground every single day, spreading the message and building a new generation of Singapore, not just in Bedok, but elsewhere in East Coast, Hougang, Aljunied, Punggol East, Sengkang West, Marine Parade, Macpherson, Jalan Besar and Yishun. Join us if you can!

[h=2]Workers' Party introduces another four new candidates[/h] The opposition party introduced Mr Kenneth Foo, Mr Dennis Tan, Mr Gurmit Singh and Mr Mohamed Fairoz Shariff on Sunday (Aug 30), but will only announce the constituencies the candidates will contest on Nomination Day on Sep 1.
Posted 30 Aug 2015 14:52 Updated 30 Aug 2015 23:44

SINGAPORE: The Workers' Party (WP) unveiled another four potential candidates for the 2015 General Election (GE) on Sunday (Aug 30).

The new faces are Mr Kenneth Foo Seck Guan, Mr Dennis Tan Lip Fong, Mr Gurmit Singh and Mr Mohamed Fairoz Shariff. The party has declared that it will contest 28 seats – five more than the 23 candidates it fielded in 2011 – and, including the four introduced on Sunday, has unveiled 16 new candidates so far.

Mr Dennis Tan, 45, joined the party in 2011 and became a member in 2012. The shipping lawyer is the vice-chairperson of the WP's media team and he has helped to produce the party's Hammer newsletter.

Describing the current parliamentary situation as "untenable" for Singapore, he said there was a "greater need for political ideas and diversity in representation".

“I was quite disturbed with some of the policies of ruling party. I wondered if the ruling party had lost its way. The one-party system is untenable for Singapore. Singaporeans should have a strong say in how they want the country to move forward," said Mr Tan.

Mr Mohamed Fairoz Shariff, 36, is a former associate librarian at National Library Board. He joined the party in 2004 and he is a member of the WP's youth wing executive committee.

"I am most concerned for adult learners and support we can provide them. At UniSIM, I saw the challenges students faced to obtain their first degree - balancing work, school and family," he explained. "Taking part is a chance for me to build bright future for my kids."

Mr Fairoz has a Master's degree in arts, majoring in Southeast Asian studies at the National University of Singapore.
Mr Kenneth Foo, who is in his 30s, works in a voluntary welfare organisation. He joined the party in 2006 and has helped out at Meet-the-People sessions at Punggol East SMC.

Mr Foo, who has an Honours degree in psychology, described himself as a "defiant child" who turned over a new leaf after a report book comment urged him to attend school regularly. "I'd like to do something meaningful and give back to community," he said. Mr Foo said that he would focus on issues such as housing, healthcare and usage of CPF monies.

Mr Gurmit Singh, 55, is the head of the legal department in a real estate company. He joined WP as a volunteer after the General Election in 2011 and did grassroots work at Aljunied GRC. Mr Singh was a regular personnel at Singapore Armed Forces before receiving his law degree at 35.

Mr Singh said he hopes to address challenges faced by Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians (PMETs), as well as doing more for a minimum wage for low-income workers.

“We should protect Singaporeans' right to jobs as jealously as some other countries do. Recent moves on minimum wage for cleaners at S$1,000 is merely scratching the surface and a token change," he said.

AHPETC ANNUAL REPORT TO BE FILED "ON TIME"
At the press conference on Sunday, WP chairperson Sylvia Lim said the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) will file its annual report for FY2014/15 by Monday. "It's on time," Ms Lim added, holding up a copy of the report alongside Mr Png Eng Huat.

Mr Png added that AHPETC will be in a "surplus position", after including grants owed to the town council.

Last week, Mr Goh likened opposition politicians to nomads who move from one place to another, without having any interest in the people’s welfare. As a parting shot, Mr Yee said: “I am no nomad, that’s why I am back.”
