Thanks for the invitation to Masjid Alkaff at Bedok Reservoir this morning. Went for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations with some of my WP colleagues and had an enjoyable time with makan and chit-chatting with leaders of the mosque and the community.

This is a much more factual reporting of the 3.5 hours session which I attended yesterday, compared to a tabloid that sensationalised parts of the meeting beyond my recognition.

I was co-opted in 2011 after the GE and had the privilege of serving alongside the dedicated members of the two CECs since then. That 6 of them were not re-elected yesterday is in no way a reflection of their levels of service to the Party, because they are some of the most hardworking and loyal members of the WP that I know of. I am sure they will continue to be of great importance to the Party in whatever capacity they will take up.

In an election where there are 14 seats to be filled, and with 18 existing CEC members and many more wanting to be in, it is inevitable that some will not be elected (one had chosen not to stand for re-election due to family commitments). I think it is also normal that there is a keen contest for the leadership positions in a political party, as well as some differences in opinions which a tabloid unfortunately tried to sensationalise. As an organisation grows and adapts itself in a changing environment, there will always be some internal contests. It can be healthy as long as it is done in an orderly manner in accordance to established rules.

Workers’ Party elects new office bearers

Lawyer Dennis Tan Lip Fong has been elected the vice-chair of the party’s media team and sociologist Daniel Goh Pei Siong as the president of its Youth Wing.

SINGAPORE: New Workers’ Party faces, lawyer Dennis Tan Lip Fong and sociologist Daniel Goh Pei Siong, have been picked as the vice-chair of the party’s media team and president of its Youth Wing, respectively.

The duo, who were unveiled during the Punggol East by-election last year, were co-opted into the party’s central executive council (CEC) months later, but sat only as council members then.

A press statement from the Workers’ Party issued on Tuesday (Aug 5) detailed its office bearers until 2016, with chairman Sylvia Lim and secretary-general Low Thia Khiang retaining the top two positions. With the exception of Mr Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap and Mr Png Eng Huat, who were chosen as council members, the party’s other parliamentary representatives all hold posts.

The party held its biennial conference two weeks ago, which party sources said saw more than 20 people putting themselves forward for the 12 seats on the top decision-making body, other than the two leadership positions.

The current CEC’s term is expected to end sometime in the third quarter of 2016, while the next General Election is due by January 2017.

In her address, she highlighted the diverse paths law graduates could take to contribute to society, as seen by her own cohort that had a senior counsel, MPs and also pioneers in the arts field and a priest serving in Kenya. She also urged the students to spend time on non-academic pursuits to hone valuable life skills.
