    Not again?!!!

    article from espnsoccernet:

    Ferdinand to miss Everton clash

Rio Ferdinand is set to miss Manchester United's Premier League opener at Everton on Monday night with a groin injury that could keep him out for a month.

The former England captain is understood to have suffered the injury during training on Friday. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is already stretched in defence for the trip to Goodison Park, as he is without Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans.

It means that Michael Carrick is in line to play at centre-back alongside Nemanja Vidic, who will be making his first competitive appearance for United since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury against FC Basel in the Champions League last December.

Northern Ireland centre-back Evans has not played all summer after ankle surgery, although he is close to a return. Smalling is out until mid-October following an operation on a broken metatarsal, while Jones - who has been troubled by back spasms - has been told by United's medical team to rest for a month.

Ferguson is hopeful that midfielder Darren Fletcher is getting closer to a comeback. The Scotland midfielder, 28, has been out of action since last December, when United revealed he was suffering from the chronic bowel condition ulcerative colitis.

But he played his first full 90 minutes for nine months as United beat Stoke at Nantwich on Saturday morning in the Under-21 Premier League - which allows sides to field three over-age outfield players.

Buttner on verge of Man Utd switch

Manchester United's pursuit of Leighton Baines appears to be over after Vitesse Arnhem left-back Alexander Buttner confirmed he is on the verge of a shock move to Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed after bringing in striker Robin van Persie that United could make another signing before the end of the transfer window but he had been expected to swoop for Everton's Baines.

But it has now emerged that United have agreed a deal to sign Van Persie's compatriot Buttner in a deal reported to be worth £3.9 million.

According to reports in the Netherlands, Buttner flew to Manchester on Sunday and is expected to undergo a medical on Monday.

Southampton, Fulham and QPR have all failed in their bids to sign the 23-year-old, who has been locked in dispute with Vitesse over his attempts to leave the Gelredrome, but Buttner is now set to complete a "dream move" to Old Trafford.

"This is really a dream come true," Buttner told Dutch TV station Omroep Gelderland. "It was all arranged very quickly and of course I am very delighted. Happily everything is coming to an end."

If report is true, Buttner will be the last signing for the season.

Read about the Kaka loan. If Modric moves to REAL, Kaka may not even be on the bench.

In any case, if it comes to fruition, it will be nice to have a quality player like him. He can orchestrate the attacks from midfield. I thot SAF should have looked at him earlier as the player was left on the REAL bench to rot. We need a creative play maker and a defensive midfielder if we are to win the treble again.

If Nani is not in the match squad for today's match, I think he is gone liao.

Zenith St Petersburg are reported to have made a bid for him.

Sunderland are reported to have made a 5 million pound bid for Berbatov.

Don't think Kaka loan will happen.

I believe Arse is more likely to take Kaka on loan if they continue to lose players at the current rate.

Nani like Berba has been ill advised by his agent. He probably thinks he can earn alot more than what has been proposed. If he thinks he can walk away free and command the kind of terms he's asking, he'd better think again. Fergie can be a farking ruthless boss and he'll make sure you warm the bench just as he did with Berba. These players should know better. As long as you are not playing in the first team, you lose that leverage, period.

The only high profile player in recent times who succeeded in leaving the club as a free agent and got a huge bump in his salary was Michael Ballack. He played Bayern out and laughed all the way to the bank.

Fergie should have a serious look at Kaka. Excluding Scholes and Giggs,we have a few injury prone players in midfield like Anderson and Cleverley. On top of that he cannot possibly expect Kagawa to play in all 38 league matches. The Bundesliga has a winter reprieve where players can recover so methinks we're still hollow in the middle of the park.

What Man Utd needs is someone who can play central midfield or central defence, like Kompany, Song, Phil Jones, even Rodwell.
It's embarrassing a team that is aspiring to be champions, going into the first league match of the season having to play a central midfielder in central defence. Not even the teams aspiring to escape relegation can "boast" that.

Man Utd real problems are at the back in defense. No Ferdinand, Smalling, Evans or Jones. Nemanja Vidic hasn't played since last December and will be very rusty.
But let's see how RVP performs for his new club. Should be an interesting match tonight.

I like the tempo of the Man U players, very fast, a lot of one touch passing, Kagawa blend in well with the team, he's a good asset to Man U, lets hope they play like this through the season.

As expected, Man Utd defence let them down again tonight. Ferdinand should get used to being the resident bench-warmer now that Michael Owen has gone.

That is the reason why the old fart needs to look at what is on offer. He has no more than 10 days to decide. Take what is on the table as I dun see anymore quality players changing clubs in the days ahead.

When I heard Carrick playing in central defence, I went straight to bed. Knn, old fart still never learn his lesson.

George Soros takes 7.85pc stake in Manchester United

Billionaire George Soros has taken a 7.85pc stake in Manchester United, betting on the UK football team to score in the financial markets as well as on the pitch.

News of the investment, made via Soros Fund Management, was released in an SEC filing after the closing bell rang on Wall Street today. The 82-year-old now owns 3,114,588 shares in the team but carries almost no voting power and will receive no dividend, thanks to the structure of the club's flotation.

Manchester United floated 16.7m shares in New York at $14 each on August 10, giving it a total valuation of $2.3bn and making it the most valuable team in the world. Its main contender for the title, Real Madrid, is worth just $1.88bn.

But since then the club has performed badly, losing almost a dollar to close today at just $13.06.

Manchester United had originally planned to float in the Far East last year, where it enjoys a large fanbase, but plans were shelved. The subsequent New York flotation was also delayed last month when turbulent conditions caused by the eurozone debt crisis spooked the club.

When it eventually launched the Financial Times reported that an underwriter for the deal, Jefferies Group, had bought shares itself to prevent the stock falling below its listing price. The Glazer family remain the club’s majority shareholder with an 58pc stake through their holding company Red Football.

The club is not the only company that has been on a downward trajectory which George Soros has pinned his fortune to. Last week it was revealed that he had spent around $10.6m buying 341,000 shares in Facebook during the second quarter. Facebook shares have lost more than 50pc of their value since their flotation, falling from $38 to as low as $18.80 today.

Last night, Peter Thiel, the founder of PayPal, was said to have sold most of his holding in Facebook worth about $400m.

There was one central defender on the bench Scott Wootten, a player who has never played one minute of premier league football and a former youth team mate of the chairman's son Oliver Gill.

One just wonders how on earth did the club arrive at an injury crisis to the back 4 at the start of the season. Tofu legs as always!

    Buttner plays left defence??

    Nani axed

NANI will be axed by Manchester United.

The Portuguese winger is going to pay a high price for his poor performance in Monday’s 1-0 defeat at Everton.

Nani can also forget about a new contract — or being allowed to leave on the cheap.

A United source said: “The club did not think his form at the end of last season put him in a very strong bargaining position over a new deal. Monday was hardly his best either.”

Ashley Young is set to replace Nani for Saturday’s visit of Fulham.

Nani, 25, has become frustrated at the collapse of talks over a new four-year deal.

The United source added: “There was an intention to get him on a new four-year contract.

“But initial demands from Nani’s side were way over the top. Right now United are happy to leave it until next summer unless his demands are dramatically dropped. But they won’t sell unless silly money comes in.”

Nani has two years left on his £90,000-a-week deal but wants in excess of £130,000.

Zenit St Petersburg are interested but United will not consider selling unless they get an offer of more than £25million.

United last night confirmed Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez, 18, has been granted a work permit.
