The oldest buildings in Siglap r not the commercial buildings but the residential houses.

Actually at corner of Changi Rd and Frankel Ave (opposite the old Dawoods Prata Shop), there was an old building that used to house a church on 2nd floor and Building materials shop on ground floor. On the top left corner of 2nd floor, you can faintly see "VS Market (1937)". This must have been quite a landmark in the old old days as whole area was probably just a giant kampong. Sadly, as I write, this nondescript building is being demolished to make way for more private housing.

Any old timers from the area can shed some history on this VS Market?

that building needed to go. it was such an eyesore for the quiet and pristine area of kembangan. used to see pickup trucks going in and out of that decrepit storage for ages. some old buildings don't deserve to be preserved.

It was a warehouse for building materials, of course you will get lorries and trucks going in and out :p. Building itself is plain but just wondered what was it used for before it became a warehouse/church. Must have been quite something in 1940s/50s being one of the few brick buildings in that area

most likely a series of sundry shops or eatery below and living quarters above, much like a shophouse.

That Malay restaurant Mat Marsala ... Is that owned by a former Lion footballer?

Or do you mean Indian Restaurant, Chat Masala, owned by Sundramoorty? He used to stay in Swan Lake area for a while but has since moved out. Friendly guy with a nice smile.

What happened to Jackies bowl? Is it still there? I remember I used to walk there to play at the arcade inside. The operator even allowed us in even if we were wearing school uniform.
