    Default bak chang festival

it's bak chang festival now. as usual, profiteering is virulent. most bak changs are up except those selling in sheng shiong which was $1.50 each. are those really nice and edible? they are mostly from matland and u know matlanders have the habit of adding lots of unwanted discarded leftovers as filings.

so are those safe to eat?

where can we still get reasonable bak chang? pls skip KIM CHOO. their quality has deteriorated alot

was at CRYSTAL JADE the other nite. they sold their bak chang from $5.20 onwards. they let me sample their abalone bak chang and frankly, at $22.50, i think better skip that. not worth it.

bak chang festival is also known as TUAN WU JIE in remembrance of a patriotic poet - chu yuan, i think his name was who committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. the peasants prayed to him by offering polished rice wrapped - bak chang -in bamboo leaves and thrown into the sea. the bamboo leaves wrapper prevented the fishes from devouring the offering and henceforth BAK CHANG FESTIVAL was born.

Last year when I just moved into my new home, my next door neighbour a Chinese Muslim convert chap and his wife gave me and my wife a few pieces of Bak Chang.. They told me that they bought the Bak Chang from this Halal Chinese restaurant at Upper Changi Rd.. The stall belongs to a Chinese Muslim couple from HK.. Taste quite good..

The original is best.....the type with added salted ege yolk is the limit.

those restaurant trying to reinvent the wheel or fix what is not broken by those abalone, expensive ingredients are waste of time.
no longer bak chang.....taste like expensive glutinous rice only.
the only new variant i dun mind is the spicy shrimp versions.....

there's one very solid bak chang stall in hong lim hawker centre. there is always a long queue. b4 they are famous, their bak chang only sold for $1.50. it's now like $3. dunno whether any increase during bak chang festival.

it's many times better than KIM CHOO's. the polished rice is very springgy QQ and tight. the fillings are very generous too. for $3 at this type of quality, it's still worth it. the queue can confirm how good their bak changs are.

by the way, their bak changs sell out very fast!

that one is HAY BEE HIAM or spicy dried shrimp filling. i tried once from KIM CHOO which was quite expensive. it was like $2.80 per dumpling. after eating, u thirst like hell for water!! the over-saltiness of the hay bee was mushed up by excessive sugar n probably msg. the thirst was damn unbearable!

This one with chicken.. What I find it interesting is that the HK guy who owns the bak chang stall is a Muslim.. Rarely heard of HK Chinese Muslims.. Its taste good too.. Will try to check out on the place again..

There are Bayi's in HK that speaks Cantonese better than any of us...HK is a place of racial intergration, long time ago...we shouldn't be surprised & their governing body, don't need to tell the people to integrate the 'foreigner's for they come, they have to adapt!

The one next to "mee Siam mai hum" is smiling in glee, for his elbow is rubbing the auntie "bak chang", and afterwards he will say, : "auntie, your 'bak chang" very firm & hard", "hou suan"! "sarap"!
