Tough call indeed. How to change engines mid-air?

The current structure and model were devised by a paranoid Old man. It's like telling the Prince that he has now to travel in an open top convertible when he inherited an armoured tank. It's like he has now to listen to us first and then talk, when his Father was doing all the talking, and we the listening, period. A lot of vested interests and patronage built up over the years has to go. The 3 branches of govt have to be separated, and we are beginning with a WP in parliament, so I hope that it will lead on to stronger parliamentary powers eventually. Defamation suits are no longer feared if the Judiciary is made out of range by more scrutiny by fearless Opposition backed by electoral power.

Getting down from that high horse is tough for PAP after decades of habit formed. Strong-man tactics, one-man party and one- man govt will follow the Old Man to his grave, but many mini-LKys will want to behave like him albeit without earning their spurs. If they dont learn quick, the PAP will become more and more irrelevant and be overtaken by a stronger party. There is no single leader within who has the charisma and forceful personality to hold the centre together, it may split as internal squabbles start. As Old man says, it is not preordained..even the mightiest empires rise and fall. We shall look forward to its implosion and peaceful transition to a golden era of political diversity, openness, democratic processes, inclusive prosperity for all, and a better Singapore.
