Dr Bilveer Singh's misplaced views on Hougang reflects armchair 'expertise'

Confuseous

The dip in the WP's share of the vote and the rise in support for the PAP is insignificant in the larger picture of national politics.

Even so, the fact that the WP's support fell by more than 2 percentage points signals voters' unhappiness on a number of issues. Mr Yaw's personal indiscretions, the doubts cast on Mr Png's integrity and, more importantly, the PAP's promise of estate improvements, were factors that chipped away at the WP's support.

The strong PAP campaign led by party heavyweights also helped Mr Desmond Choo improve on his 2011 General Election showing.

The final tally spoke loudly for the status quo in Hougang and residents' confidence in the WP. But voters were also, very gently, signalling something: That the WP must get its act together and do much more for discerning voters.

While the "Hougang Spirit" is undented, the demands on the WP have also increased.

Here is where Mr Choo's improved showing is equally significant. A power shift can take place if the WP continues to bungle. Also Mr Choo's performance partly reflects his success in reaching out to younger voters, an area in which Mr Png would need to do much more.

The by-election results signal to both parties that the ward can indeed be up for grabs if either party is able to win the hearts and minds of voters as well as come up with effective programmes to serve them. We will only know in the next General Election.

As non-obvious as this may be, this BE also secured Hougang GE2016 fate...

Some years ago Bilveer Singh wrote an article critical of the govt and he was immediately raked over th coals for it in public. He nearly lost his job. He had to make a public apology, concede he was in error and have been very obedient since.

Imagine a University don, writing an article over an increase of 145 votes along the lines that an earthquake that was unexpected had taken place. I was truly shocked to see an academic stoop so low.

Years ago, BS started out as a reasonably independent observer. There was a sudden drastic change and he joined the ranks of the useful idiots for the PAPzis.

Cannot blame him. It is understandable as his rice-bowl is at stake.

There are many people in Singapore with no backbone who forsake ethics and morality for money and status.

As an "expert", Bilveer should be able to differentiate vote changes caused by underlying trend changes, transient issues and the heat of the campaign effects. It seemed he had lumped everything under trend changes and see as significant a miserable hundred odd votes.

a 2% swing in a closely fought 50-50 fight is earthquake-like significant...not when its 60-40. dump analyst should be...anal-ed...
carry balls also dont have to end up looking downright dump!

I share the exact sentiments. When I read Dr Bilveer's article, I read it with disbelief and disdain. Full of spin and BS. The message from Hougang residents is loud and clear and yet he wrote it like DC's PAP had performed beyond expectations. Tell you what Dr- DC and his PAP had secretly hoped for a miracle to happen but methinks Heaven got eyes! Don't try to downplay the WP's victory-it's utterly disrespectful and disingenuous! Holy shit!

"Also Mr Choo's performance partly reflects his success in reaching out to younger voters"

Biggest joke ever. Bilveer Singh is really playing clairvoyant here, and truly scraping the bottom of the barrel. For the record Choo garnered a grand total of 145 extra votes from GE 2011.
