Getting promoted to Associate Professor is no big deal really. There are more associate profs in any universities compared to lecturers, senior lecturers, asst profs and profs. Even if you add them all, there are still more associate profs.

That's very true. Factual in fact. One need to chalk a number of years in a teaching post and the Associate Professor title is yours automatically. It's getting from Associate Professor to a full Professor that's really tough and stringent, and only the real good ones make it.
