Ethnic Shan celebrate their state national day on Feb 7 for the first time since the Shan State Army, led by Lt Gen Yawd Serk (wearing sunglasses), signed a ceasefire agreement with the Myanmar government last year. The ancient 10-day rite of Triyumpawai marks the Brahmin New Year, a time for devotees to worship Shiva who, according to Hindu myth, comes down to earth during the period.
