Political allegiance should not be factor in the provision of legal aid to needy Sing

Political allegiance should never be factor in the provision of legal aid to needy Singaporeans.

I read with deep concern an article 'Subhas Anandan to offer free legal aid to Hougang residents if Desmond Choo is elected' [TemasekTimes, 11May2012]: "Prominent criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan has joined in the fray in Hougang by promising to set up a legal bureau at Hougang Community Club to offer free legal aid to Hougang residents if PAP candidate Desmond Choo wins the by-election on 26 May!"

I can appreciate it if legal professionals used their knowledge and expertise towards achieving happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation and to especially help the poor and downtrodden, but to apply their expertise in such an overtly political partisan fashion, what does this move imply about the impartiality of the legal profession from the prejudices of politics and and the executive?

I believe all members of the law society and the Bar have to be professionally disinterested, and thus impartial, towards issues of a political slant.

I apologize if I have misunderstood the report and as a result obtained a wrong impression but my impression is that legal practitioners should always remain impartial and never have to resort to either political prostitution or political manipulation in its establishment of justice within the community- to do so will certainly sully the image of the legal profession as an impartial judicial body separate from the whims and fancies of ruling political parties.

Justice should not be based upon party political allegiances. Justice ought be politically disinterested and impartial. And nobody should be above the law.

Was he misquoted in mistranslation? Or was he foolish enough to bribe the voters, which is clearly illegal?

Never trust lawyers.

The highly attrition rate of lawyers leaving the profession is due, principally, to the clarity of conscience and the peace of mind which descend when one no longer practices the vocation.

Anyway, Tks for a clarification:

Free legal clinic not linked to by-election
THE Association of Criminal Lawyers of Singapore (ACLS) was approached by Mr Desmond Choo and a mutual friend a few weeks ago to hold pro bono legal clinics at Hougang Community Centre, to assist residents of Hougang who required legal advice.
It was subsequently decided that the ACLS will hold a free clinic at the community centre today. This decision was made before it was announced that there was going to be a by-election in Hougang on May 26.
The ACLS clinic will be held notwithstanding the by-election announcement as it has no connection whatsoever with the by-election.
For the avoidance of doubt, the ACLS will consider all requests for pro bono legal clinics from any organisation subject to our resources as we are a self-funding body.
If citizens think that our legal clinic in Hougang is political, the facts stated above should put their minds at rest.
The ACLS is not a political organisation and will not participate in any political activities.
