Hougang by-election not just a local election: WP

SINGAPORE: The Workers' Party (WP) has said the Hougang by-election is not just a local election.

Many problems faced by Hougang residents are national issues, said the party's speakers at an election rally on Saturday.

It was the first rally for the Hougang by-election.

The 11 speakers at the rally included WP leaders Low Thia Khiang and Sylvia Lim as well as the party's Members of Parliament from Aljunied GRC.

The party's MPs such as Chen Show Mao and Gerald Giam said many problems faced by Hougang residents are national issues.

The issues include the widening income gap, support for young families, job prospects and the rising cost of living.

The speakers urged Hougang residents to vote the party's candidate Png Eng Huat into Parliament so that the presence of the opposition will ensure that the government is responsive to the needs of Singaporeans and that people are at the centre of its policies.

Workers' Party chairman Sylvia Lim also spoke about the significance of the Hougang vote.

Addressing the rally, she said: "We have a team of dedicated professionals with Town Council experience because for the past 20 years, you Hougang voters have supported us. Because of you, Singaporeans can see they now have a choice.

"They can see that it is not only the PAP that can run Town Councils. So we are grateful to you dear Hougang voters. We know that you have made sacrifices for Singapore because you care so much for our country and your children's future. We have the deepest respect for you and will never take you for granted.

"Mr Low Thia Khiang worked extra hard to make sure your Town Council was managed. He fought for your rights in Parliament as your opposition voice. Png Eng Huat will do the same."

The theme of sacrifice by Hougang residents who have voted the WP into Parliament since 1991, continued with Mr Png's speech. He spoke of the many residents whom he met, who said they would continue to put their faith in the party.

"You have made your stand, which I will summarise in just 5 words - Hougang is not for sale! One resident I spoke to during my house visit said he wants to give the opposition a chance to grow, just like what Singaporeans did in the early years when it allowed the PAP to grow," said Mr Png.

Mr Png also spoke at length about what the party perceives as lopsided policies by the government. He said for a truly inclusive society, government policies such as upgrading should be fair across the board, no matter which party voters have elected.

"You have proven time and again to the PAP government that there is more to life than money, that having your voice heard in Parliament is many times better than having free Teochew porridge," added Mr Png.

Workers' Party secretary-general Low Thia Khiang spoke in Mandarin and Teochew. He urged voters to support Mr Png, whom he described as a man of integrity.

The next Workers' Party rally is expected to be held on Tuesday.

This is the key to LTK's 20 yr reign in Hougang: tio jiu nang speaks excellent Teochew. Can't imagine putting a kang tang young boy in charge. The reality is there are still many old folks in Hougang, and many are Teochew

I am not against any Opposition party and is pretty supportive of any Opposition parties but looking at the BIG PICTURE, this political scenario of only ONE BIG PARTY and MANY SMALLER PARTIES must stop.

This is not about democracy or lack of it. Real democracy means we can have more than one choice of government but now Singapore do not have that because alternative parties kept on cancelling each other out for 47 years and remained small and inconsequential. Singaporeans only have PAP to choose from to be government. Singaporeans are force by circumstances to vote PAP.

SDP, WP, SDA, NSP, SPP, RP can have all the best policies in the world and debate until death but no power, no votes, no parliamentary seats, no government positions, nothing will happen and nothing will change. Be practical.

Singaporeans are trained by PAP for 47 years to accept single party stability. Singaporeans appetite for coalition government is very very little as compared to single alternative party government.

Best chance tp replace PAP as government is to join WP and help WP grow base on Hougang & Aljunied GRC platforms. This will be the fastest route and a choice with higher chance to succeed and will not waste everybody's time, money, effort and youth.

Unless NSP, SDP, SDA, RP, SPP are still only interested to play musical chairs to be ONLY leading Opposition party like from 1980s-2000s between JBJ's WP and Chiam's SDP and in the end achieve nothing and wasted everybody's time, money, effort and youth.

How many 5 years and how many 47 years do Singaporeans have to allow alternative parties to be fractious ?? Singaporeans do not want to replace WP and start all over again. Singaporeans want to grow WP and replace PAP asap.

Singaporeans are force to vote PAP every election because only PAP is government-sized party and Singapore still needs a government at the end of the day. Singaporeans are sick of alternative party playing musical chairs and the endless cycle.

Join WP and grow it to be government-sized asap please. Start competing for government rather than be leading Opposition.

Singapore is too small for so many political parties but big enough for 2-party Parliament system. But we dont even have the second government-sized party yet and here we have so many smaller inconsequential alternative parties. But what is the point ???<a class="uiLinkSubtle" href="http://www.facebook.com/workersparty/posts/208355509284529?comment_id=631365&offset=0&total_comments=20" data-ft="{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;N&quot;}"><abbr title="Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 12:32am" data-utime="1337445172" class="timestamp livetimestamp">10 hours ago</abbr> · · 28

Chiam See Tong and SDP had the same chance as WP today to grow to be government during 1990s when SDP had 3 parliament seats but we all know the history that SDP self-destructed due to differences between Ling How Doong, Chiam See Tong & Chee Soon Juan.
Opposition became a sorry state after GE 1997 and it took 10 years to recover the confidence of Singaporeans. Meanwhile PAP took the 10 years to to increase immigration, introduce damaging policies and abuse their positions.
Let us hope WP have no repeat of what happen to SDP during 1990s.
Low Thia Khiang and Sylvia Lim are proven political leaders and party leaders with long track record, I do not understand why leaders of other alternative parties prefer to strike out on their own rather than join WP and work for the two WP leaders.
Are political egos, differences and pride more important than Singapore's political development, replacing the PAP government and democratic process ??
No more merry-go-rounds and musical chairs please.<a class="uiLinkSubtle" href="http://www.facebook.com/workersparty/posts/208355509284529?comment_id=631475&offset=0&total_comments=26" data-ft="{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;N&quot;}"><abbr title="Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 1:03am" data-utime="1337447037" class="timestamp livetimestamp">10 hours ago</abbr> · <button class="stat_elem as_link cmnt_like_link" type="submit" name="like_comment_id[631475]" value="631475" title="Like this comment">Like</button> · 11

highly refreshing and an excellent piece!

The likes of GMS will scowl and complain on how Low should do it this way, talk that way etc etc.

Ego ego all the way... But the truth is out there ... From JBJ highly charismatic hold on WP to low profile Low, over 20 years build up an election winning Opposition Party from lessons within and without - culminating in accepting LKY's challenge to contest a GRC - but on his terms and timing.

Low may not have LKY's Intellectual brilliance but in terms of political resilience, he holds his own.

However smart they sound, the English-educated neoliberals like Vincent Wijey, Chee, Kenneth, the Scholar couple and of course political commentator Goh Meng Seng imho falls way short of Low's astute and disciplined attitude towards achieving electoral success for the Opposition (aspiring some day to be an Alternative to PAP)..

So talk is cheap, ideas are fine but in execution, and the order ( no putting the cart before the horse) and the crafting/grafting of organization development, Low is proven.

Let Meng Seng and his likes get to be right, quibbling and spliting hairs over all kinds of matters all over the place, which in the final analysis, are inconsequentials and utterly pedestrain though high-sounding and seemingly insightful.

I can't imagine GMS having his political life back. He'll never be close to LTK, SL, JBJ, CST and many others in the opposition arena. No loss to Singapore's scene.

This Ah Huat has given a very good speech, what he said is soo true about upgrading etc. If he is elected in, I hope he raises the standards further in Parliamentary debates and that GMS will shut the hell up and run with his tail between his legs,,oh and give Pinky more sleepless nights and expose the incompetence of his Ministars
