[h=2]Three ‘minor’ disruptions in a day – Singapore’s public rail system sets new ‘First World’ record[/h]Posted by temasektimes on May 1, 2012
Singapore’s public rail system sets an astonishing ‘First World’ record yesterday with three minor train ‘disruptions’ in a single day.
In the morning, trains along the East-West line were delayed due to a combination of ‘bad weather condition’ and ‘train fault.’ At around 1.30pm, trains along the North East Line were delayed for about 10 minutes as a result of ‘signaling fault’.
Just when commuters thought their nightmare has ended, trains along the North-South Line were ‘moving slower’ again according to this announcement by SMRT over its PA system:
“North-bound train service from Woodlands towards Jurong is moving slower due to train fault.”
One irate commuter Solomon Teo posted his unpleasant trip on Facebook:
The light and aircon were on, the train wasn’t crowded(because it was around 5pm. Non peak hour). The whole trip took me 1hr 1min, normally it takes around 45mins.”
The latest spate of train delays and disruptions are not reported by the state media which has swept it under the carpet as if nothing as happened.
There are no immediate comments from both train operators SMRT and SBS Transit on the screw-ups which has led to increasing calls from Singaporeans to nationalize the public railway system before a real disaster happens.

<!--end of story image, if any-->By Christopher Tan
<!--start of story text-->MRT commuters faced slower train services on Monday when signalling faults occurred on the East-west and North-east lines.
The delay on the East-west line happened around 9.20am, during the morning peak period. Operator SMRT Corp said a train developed a signalling fault around Tampines station, when it was heading west towards Joo Koon. Because of the fault - which affected communication between train and track - the train had to slow down.
This meant commuters going west had to wait longer than usual for each train to arrive; and their journey time was also lengthened by around four minutes.
The faulty train was pulled out of service when it reached Joo Koon. It took about half an hour for train services to revert to normal.
In the afternoon, at around 1.30pm, a signalling fault developed on the tracks near the North-east line's Woodleigh station.
As a precaution, operator SBS Transit said trains going north from Farrer Park to Hougang stations slowed down.
SBS Transit said this caused travel times 'to be extended progressively by about 10 minutes from 1.30pm'. By 2pm, the schedule was back to normal.

SMRT's Q4 profit drops 59%

SINGAPORE - Singapore's main subway operator SMRT Corp Ltd reported on Monday a 59 percent drop in fiscal fourth-quarter net profit, hurt by higher operating expenses and impairment of goodwill on its bus operations.

The company earned S$13.9 million in the three months ended March, down from S$34 million a year earlier.

SMRT declared a reduced final dividend of 5.70 Singapore cents compared with 6.75 cents a year ago.

SMRT shares have fallen around 7 percent since it said last week it would spend S$900 million to overhaul the train system following numerous breakdowns in recent months. Part of the cost will be borne by the government's Land Transport Authority (LTA).

"We are still in discussion with LTA on cost-sharing arrangements," interim CEO Tan Ek Kia said in a statement.

Under Singapore's regulatory framework for public transport, LTA owns the assets but SMRT is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the train system.

Looking ahead, SMRT said it expects revenue to rise in the next 12 months due to the expected rise in train and bus ridership. But earnings will be hurt by higher repair and maintenance costs, as well as expenses on energy and staff.

Several analysts have downgraded the stock or cut their price targets on concerns such as higher operational costs, regulatory risks and uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a new chief executive.

Out of 17 analysts covering the stock, 10 have sell or strong sell ratings, four have hold recommendations, while the remaining three have buy or strong buy calls, according to Thomson Reuters data.

SMRT shares fell 0.3 percent to close at S$1.68 on Monday.

[h=2]ex-CEO Saw sacked senior engineers and replace them with inexperienced ones...[/h]
All info here is from earlier thread
http://forum.channelnewsasia.com/showthread.php?29475-ex-SMRT-staff-on-why-SMRT-breaks-down...

TO save cost and make profits Saw sacked the first batch of engineers trained by the train suppliers abd replaced the with cheaper less experienced engineers. As a result the whole system was not maintained properly and much engineering knowledge was lost when experienced staff were forced to leave.

Lucky i did not become engineer treated so badly under singaoore system. Nowadays nobody wants to be engineer leow

It'll be fun if a bomb explodes or a Sarin nerve gas attack happens during rush hour.

Even if the explosion or nerve gas doesn't get you, the stampede will.

Actually there's nothing MRT can do except to add more train and decide the quality of the train. I read few month news ago, MRT purchased 5 times due to demand/replace old trains, they bought 2 times from Japan, 1 time (european country, cant remember) and the 2 latest purchased are made in China, cut cost and maybe thats one of the problem for the breakdowns.

compared from the 1st purchased and the 5th purchased, each new cabin is 5 ton heavier than the old one, thats excluding the passengers, thats why the tracks cannot tahan the weight.
