Wages must rise faster with higher living costs: Minister
Slow down income gap growth: Swee Say

By Janice Heng

The higher cost of living means that wages must go up faster, said labour chief Lim Swee Say on Friday.

The widening of the income gap must also be slowed down, added the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) secretary-general in a message ahead of the labour movement's celebrations on May Day on Tuesday.

Inflation hit a high of 5.2 per cent last month, after staying at more than 4 per cent in the first two months of the year.

In his message, Mr Lim also set out the challenges - old and new - which Singapore faces.

In 1973,

a 4 room flat (92 sq m) is $15.5K
a plate of chicken rice is 70 cents.
a fresh poly grad pay is $400 pm.
a minister pay is 3-4k pm, about 40K per year.

In 2012

same flat is $300K. (19x)
chicken rice $3.00 (4x)
salary poly grad $1.4 to $1.8K pm (4.5x)
minister pay say $1 m per year (25x)

Rightfully accounted for inflation

a 4 room flat should cost $139500 with 2 incomes to service the mortgage, since wages went up 4.5 times
a minister pay should be no more than $200,000

Prices in circa 2000-2005 was in sync with wage rise after adjustment for inflation
Prices after circa 2008 is out of sync with wage rise after adjustment for inflation

Good collection of statistics.

a comparison of the price for the 4room flat is nothing conclusive, should factor in the floor area of those built in the 70s vs those built right now.:eek::eek:
or go by the comparison of psf pricing.

Workers have to search their hearts and conscience whether this Ah Suay and the PAP is doing them any good.

that is why I used the 4 room in 1973 cos it's 92 sqm. 80s 4 room flat is 103 sqm. 90s 4 room can as large as 115 sqm. Current 4 room shrunk to 90 sqm.

Can you imagine, the people are voting years after years, especially the SINgpore workers, to see their ability to put a roof over their heads & food on the table eroding & is happy to be in debts by high cost of living, consumption & housing!

That is how the workers are taken care of these days...but we are just LOVING It! the 60% that is!

These are absolutely redundant statements to make. Who doesn't know that wages must go up faster and widening of income gap also be slowed down. Coming from a Minister who is paid millions! Even the kopi ah hia at the neighborhood coffee shop know this. The role of a Minister is not to tell the people what they already know. In fact these are what the people have been telling the govt for ages. And now he come and tell these back to us. The role of a Minister is to find the solutions to these issues. And the bloody ST splashed it out as a headline news. S'pore can only be rescued if the 60% wake up and show more balls.

Like I said earlier: the rich and the well connected will get richer and the remaining 95% of the population will get poorer.

Geed and the greed management, and their cronies are kept in the establishment to defend the special reward distribution system for the top pigs.

How much pay increase will these workers received if they upgrade their skills? A raise of a paltry $50 or $100 more?

It depends on how much upgrade I skill or productivity. Some upgraded till they become bosses themselves

When he has his master's cock in his mouth, that is what you get from the labour (or employer) chief. Still never forget when he argued against inflating wages before the last election. He said inflating wages is a risky move. See his 360 degree turn of view after Lim Chong Ya's speak out. This goes to show that Lim Swee Say has no opinion of his own. He simply passed his time as daft labour chief with full of words and no actions, every month he just watched his CPF statements getting more figures added on.
