Singapore must be the stupidest country to be screwed again and again.

SINGAPORE - A former education agent who cheated three banks of over $2.5 million in a study loan scam was sentenced to five years' jail on Thursday.

Go Boon Chai, 38, pleaded guilty two weeks ago to the fraudulent acts committed between 2006 and 2009.

According to reports, Go went to the now-defunct Brookes Business School in 2006 to sign up for a business management course.

Go was provided by the school's principal then, Benny Yap Chee Mun, 41, with documents of inflated course fees, which he took the banks to apply for study loans.

Go was able to get $12,000 from RHB bank and $15,500 from Citibank, The Straits Times said. The total sum was paid to Brookes, with Yap pocketing $9,000 and the remaining $18,500 given to Go.

The two later conspired with other students to obtain more study loans for courses with Brookes, with Yap providing the documents of inflated course fees.

To get in touch with students, Go placed advertisements in the newspapers which read "Need Cash? $10,000", The Straits Times reported.

In 2007, Go approached another private school, Raffles Academy, to use a similar scheme to apply for more study loans.

Over the three years, a total of $2.56 million was obtained in loans from three banks, RHB, Citibank and POSB.

Yap's case will be heard in the coming months. More than 100 students, mostly Singaporeans and permanent residents, were named in the scam. It is not known if they will be prosecuted, an earlier report in The Straits Times said.
