SINGAPORE - A 34-year-old man was on Tuesday jailed for 10 weeks for having paid sex with an underage prostitute.

Loh Ben-Ni was one of 51 men charged with having sex with the same 17-year-old in a high-profile vice ring case, which has been going on since 2012.

He pleaded guilty to paying $500 for the girl's services on Nov 6, 2010.

The offence took place at Hotel 81 Lavender in Lavender Street, between 6.27pm and 8.02pm that evening.

The girl operated under the moniker "Chantelle" in an online vice ring run by 41-year-old pimp Tang Boon Thiew, who was jailed for four years and 10 months, and fined $90,000 for vice-related offences.

Loh was also fined $10,000 after admitting to an unrelated count of forgery.

The maximum penalty for commercial sex with a person under 18 years of age is seven years in jail and a fine.

SINGAPORE - All of about 40 men who have gone before the courts for having paid sex with a minor, in a high-profile online vice ring case first reported in 2012, have been found guilty so far. But on Tuesday, Mr Timothy Gan Wee Jin, 40, bucked the trend when he became the first to be cleared by a district court.

Mr Gan, then an investment adviser with DBS, was accused of paying $650 for the sexual services of a female under 18 years old at Strand Hotel, Bencoolen Street, between 6.32pm and 8.42pm on Dec 8, 2010.

Mr Gan, who is currently unemployed, had maintained throughout the eight-day trial that he did not have sex with the 17-year-old. He had booked her through her pimp, Tang Boon Thiew, who responded to Mr Gan's private message via the Sammyboy forum on Dec 7 to confirm his engagement.

The prosecution's case was that the minor recalled six occasions in which she did not have sex with clients, and given that Mr Gan was not one of them, he must had had sex with her.

But the defence, led by Mr Thong Chee Kun, submitted that all evidence showed that the minor was unsure about the six occasions.

There was also no corroborative evidence on the six occasions. The minor also could not remember the exact number of times where no sex took place.

She had testified during the trial that she could not recognise Mr Gan, one of 51 men charged with having sex with the teen.

District Judge May Mesenas said there was no direct evidence that the minor had sexual intercourse with Mr Gan, whose defence was one of denial.

She said it was not clear the number of occasions the minor did not have sex. She found that the minor had given two different versions on the number of occasions that she did not have sex with her clients, which leads one to question the reliability of the evidence.

Judge Mesenas said she did not think it was safe to convict Mr Gan based on the minor's evidence. She acquitted Mr Gan, saying the prosecution had not proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The maximum penalty for the commercial sex offence is seven years' jail and a fine.

SINGAPORE - One of the 51 men in a high profile online vice case was fined $10,000 on Monday for commercial sex with an underage girl after the court exercised judicial mercy in view of his medical condition.

Koh Hooi Hon, 46, former deputy chief executive officer of interdealer broking firm Tradition, is the first man to be given a fine due to exceptional circumstances.

But Deputy Public Prosecutor Ramesh Ethan Ananda said this case should not be used as a sentencing precedent in future cases.

Koh, now unemployed, is the 46th man to be dealt with so far in the case. He pleaded guilty to one charge of paying $650 for the sexual services of the minor, then 17, at Sloane Court Hotel in Balmoral Road, on Dec 9, 2010.

SINGAPORE - An accounts manager was jailed for four weeks on Tuesday in relation to a long-running online vice ring scandal involving an underage girl.

Singapore permanent resident Atet Kardjono Sianandar, 42, is the 48th man to be dealt with and 46th to be convicted among 51 men first hauled to court three years ago.

He admitted to paying $750 for the 17-year-old's sexual services at Elizabeth Hotel on Nov 20, 2010.

In his text messages to the social escort's pimp, Tang Boon Thiew, Atet had asked whether the minor was over 18. Tang assured him that she was.

Before the girl turned up at the hotel room, Atet had told Tang that he would like to check the minor's identity card but Tang told him she did not bring it along.

SINGAPORE - A 29-year-old man was jailed for 10 weeks on Wednesday for having paid sex with an underaged girl.

Danny Wang Ting Wei, who was working in a construction company, is the 50th man to be dealt with and the 48th to be convicted out of the 51 men first hauled to court three years ago.

Two have been acquitted and most of the others were jailed between 10 and 12 weeks each for similar offences.

He admitted to paying $650 for the sexual services of a 17-year-old social escort, who was working for pimp Tang Boon Thiew, on Jan 6, 2011.

Tang, 41, who is serving 58 months' jail and was fined $90,000 two years ago on 20 vice-related charges, began running the online vice ring in 2010.

The minor, who is now 22, was described on the website as an 18-year-old polytechnic student. She started working for Tang some time in September 2010.

Some time in late 2010, Wang came across the website. After seeing the minor's profile, he sent Tang a text message on Jan 6, 2011 to book her for sex.

He later booked a room at Strand Hotel in Bencoolen Street. He informed Tang of the room number. Tang relayed the message to the girl who turned up and had sex with Wang in the room between 4.45pm and 7.26pm. He paid her $650 and did not verify her age.

Wang could have been jailed for up to seven years and/or fined for having paid sex with a person aged under 18 years.
