State of Emergency Thai airports...

BANGKOK — Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat declared a state of emergency at Bangkok’s two commercial airports on Thursday and instructed the police and some military units to deal with protesters occupying the facilities.

The order, announced in a nationally televised address, came after a cabinet meeting in the northern city of Chiang Mai, a location apparently chosen to avoid confrontations with protesters, who in Bangkok are occupying the prime minister’s offices as well as the airports.

“It is necessary for me to announce an emergency decree in some areas,” Mr. Somchai said. “There is no intention to harm anyone.”

He assigned police, air force and naval units to “take care” of the situation. It was unclear whether this meant they are charged with clearing protestors out of the facilities.

emergency or no emergency, there's not much force that the authorities are applying to remove the protestors. let the econ slump further, let the baht weaken further, it'd benefit their export mkt anyway.

Emergency? What emergency? I heard that the protesters are enjoying themselves at the airports (both Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang). Free foods and free drinks, sponsored by Sondhi and other PAD supporters.

Shut down? What shut down? The electricity, aircon and water supply is still on, even toilet cleaners are still reporting for work. The protesters are enjoying themselves there with free aircon and clean toilets.

On the other hand, Thai girls already in Singapore have the better deal of the cards. Now they can get free no-penalty extension on their return air tickets and get renewals on their social visit passes from Immigration without hassle, just by citing that there's no flight back to Bangkok.

Even the military chief was asking for somchai to step down. Maybe the food & refreshments to the protestors are military rations?
