Yishun murders: Tattoos, blood letters to seal their love

SINGAPORE - Details of the love story behind the couple at the centre of the 2008 stabbings in Yishun were revealed in court yesterday.

Accused Wang Zhijian gave investigation office Assistant Superintendent Jason Lim an account of his relationship with deceased Zhang Meng.

In his statement, which was read out in court on Thursday, Wang said that he had a tattoo on his back of Madam Zhang.

According to local media reports he also revealed that they had a tumultuous relationship with many break-ups and reconciliations.

He did not know she was married until about a year into their relationship.

When she confessed to him in June 2006, he decided to end it. But she convinced him not to.

Three months later, he wanted to break up as he suspected she was seeing other men, reported The Straits Times.

But this time, she reaffirmed his love to him by pricking her finger and writing in Chinese characters, "I love Wang Zhi" on a piece of paper.

But she stopped saying her finger hurt. She asked him to prick his finger and finish what she wanted to say. He obliged and added the words "Jian I want to marry him".

In November 2006, Madam Zhang told her husband about Wang. Her husband, Mr Feng Jinqiang, met up with Wang and Madam Zhange and calmly let her choose who she wanted to be with.

Madam Zhang said she chose Wang as she did not have feelings for her husband.

Two days later he received many calls from Madam Zhang's younger brother, younger sister and brother-in-law.

They pestered him to go to Madam Zhang's home. He was beaten up by her sister and brother when he got there. Her brother also threatened to kill him.
Wang and Madam Zhang fled Tianjin for Chengdu after Chinese New Year but returned after 20 days as she missed her daughter.

Wang resigned from his job in April 2007 on medical grounds and received a pension.

According to the national daily, he spent 100,000 Yuan on branded clothes and expensive meals for Madam Zhang in three months.

In May 2007, he tattooed her picture and a rose on his back.

Zhang left later that month to tend to Mr Feng, who had had a stroke.

In July, they broke up but patched things up in September. Between September and November 2007, she and her daughter Jianyu stayed with him. Jianyu later got a place in a school in Singapore.

They broke up again in March 2008 and he moved into a new place without telling her.

But Madam Zhang tracked him down when she returned to Tianjin and rekindled their relationship. Madam Zhang then returned to Singapore when the school term started.

Two months later, when she went back to Tianjin she asked him to follow her to Singapore.

On September 19, he was arrested for her murder in Singapore.

The trial continues next Friday.

THEIR illicit love affair started about 10 years after they first met. For the two Tianjin natives, the next few tumultuous years were marked by painful break-ups and tender reconciliations.

Details of their stormy relationship were revealed when accused Wang Zhijian's statements to investigation officer Assistant Superintendent Jason Lim were read out in court yesterday.

Chapter One: The meeting

Wang met Madam Zhang Meng at a brokerage firm in 1996 after being introduced by Wang's colleague. Wang was there to trade in stocks.

They lost touch but three years later, they bumped into each other and had a casual conversation. In mid-2004, she called his home. It surprised him as he did not give her his phone number.

They talked about his job as a storekeeper and she said she was a forwarding agent. About a year later, he was again surprised when she called him on his mobile phone and asked to meet.

They went to a coffee house and there, he bared his soul. He told her about his divorce more than a year before and how the split was due to incompatibility.

She listened more than she spoke, and said little about herself including her marital status.

From then, they met once a week, usually on Thursdays, which he would later find out was the day her husband was on night duty. She would pick Wang up in her car and go to a coffee house or a park.

He liked her but they were not physical as he was a conservative and traditional person, he claimed.

This went on for a few months till he could no longer afford to pay for their outings. But he hid that fact and lied that he had personal matters to attend to.

During Christmas, he wished her Merry Christmas via SMS. She called him and they chatted. After that, they started meeting more frequently than before.

Chapter Two: The affair

In early 2006, she asked him if he loved her.

"I admitted and she asked why I did not hug her. I then hugged her and we had intimate bodily contact. She blamed me for not holding her hands during the last movie outing," he said.

A week later, they had sex at his place. This was what they would do every week for the next two months until she asked him to move to a swankier flat.

He found the ideal spot and spent about RMB100 (S$21) every week on lilies and roses - which she liked - to decorate the flat. She rejected his requests to move in and revealed that she was married.

Despite his earlier suspicions, this revelation still saddened him. He asked for a break-up but she dissuaded him.

In September 2006, he suspected she had other lovers when he overheard two of her phone conversations with two different men. He no longer trusted her and wanted to split.

But she said the two men were colleagues who were playing pranks on her.

She said he was the only she loved and wouldn't want to live if he ditched her.

"She told me that since the first glance at me, she had fallen in love with me. She wanted to be with me for the rest of her life," he said.

To express her love, she pricked her finger with a needle and wrote, "I love Wang Zhi", in blood on a piece of paper, but could not continue as it was painful.

She asked him to complete the sentence so he pricked his finger and wrote "Jian, I want to marry him" and "I love her until I die" after she asked him to prove his love for her.

Chapter Three: Her Family

When her husband found out about them, she said she chose Wang as she no longer felt for her husband, who respected her decision.

He later called Wang claiming that Madam Zhang had a few affairs before. Although Wang believed him, he said he was not interested in the past.

Then, her siblings called and demanded that he show up at her place. He did despite Madam Zhang's warnings not to.

Her siblings, including a brother who claimed to be a well-known secret society member, physically and verbally abused him. They threatened to kill him.

He fled after proclaiming his love for her. The couple then escaped to a hotel in another district. Afraid that her brother would turn up at his workplace, Wang didn't report for work for a month. They went to Beijing en route to Chengdu, where she suggested they settle.

While in Beijing, she said she missed her daughter and wanted to file for a divorce, so they returned to Tianjin. But she began to change when her husband suffered a stroke in May 2007. She wanted to take care of him even though the divorce had been finalised.

She stopped seeing Wang but looked him up four months later with a change of heart. She and her daughter Jianyu - whom she had given up custody of - moved in to his place.

He tried showing love to the girl as he loved her mother, but she didn't like him.

He rented a car on a long-term basis so they could enjoy a better lifestyle. Madam Zhang tried to send Jianyu to school in Switzerland but was unsuccessful.

She managed to get her a place in Singapore instead and they moved here in December 2007.

In March 2008, she broke up with Wang. He moved to a new flat without telling her but she managed to track him down when she returned with her daughter during the school holidays.

They reconciled. She returned to Singapore when school term started.

"At that time, I did not have that kind of feeling for Zhang Meng. I was also mentally and physically tired over our relationship," he said.

Two months later, when she returned to Tianjin, she asked him to follow her to Singapore, assuring him she would take care of him and would bear his expenses.

The story continues next Friday when trial resumes.

About the Case

Wang Zhijian is on trial for three counts of murder, for causing the deaths of Madam Zhang Meng, Feng Jianyu, and Sally between 11pm on Sept 18, 2008 and 12.49am the next day. Another charge of attempted murder of Sally's daughter Grace has been stood down.

The alleged killings took place at the five-room flat Madam Zhang was renting on the sixth storey of Block349, Yishun Avenue 11.
Wang and the four victims are all Chinese nationals.

We are not giving the real names of Grace and her mother as she was a minor when the attacks took place.
If convicted of murder, Wang faces the death penalty.

Blades of fury

A serrated knife that Wang Zhijian, 45, allegedly used to stab and slash Madam Zhang Meng, 42, and her daughter, Feng Jianyu, 15. It had bloodstains containing their DNA.

The knife was found on a makeshift mattress on the floor of one of the bedrooms.

A chopper that Wang allegedly used to attack Grace, 15, who together with her mother, Sally, 36, was a co-tenant in the five-room flat. It had bloodstains containing Wang's and her DNA.

A non-serrated knife that Wang allegedly used in the attacks on Grace. Both their DNA were found in the bloodstains on this knife. It was found under the chopper in the master bedroom toilet.

A metal spatula that had blood stains containing Jianyu's and Wang's DNA. It was unlikely to have been used in the attacks as it was too blunt. It was found in the washing machine in the kitchen.

Good basic theory of basic self defence. There're two more factors in the equation in reality. Can you aim and do you dare?

Anyway, in this particular case, just kill him. The legal defence of self defence surely stands even if handled by a lawyer under pupilage.

There's no such thing as he is so invincible that he cannot be killed. The body posture of an assassin will reveal something about his weakness - height. The jacket, the bag and the knife that you use are vital for your survival. Every warrior has to be armoured. An armour can allow you to fight head on without too much fear of a sharp weapon like a knife. Running may not be a bad option. Hole up is the best - fortification is the best armour. Lock yourself in your room if you are not prepared for any engagement that will give you a victory.

Yishun triple murder accused says: 'I was her slave'

More details have emerged of murder suspect Wang Zhi Jian's relationship with victim Zhang Meng.

The New Paper reported Wang as saying that he was treated like a slave whenever he was with her.

He had to cook for Zhang and her daughter, handwash their clothes and undergarments and spend what was left of his savings on the crab meals they enjoyed.

Wang also had to pee and pass motion into plastic bags and newspapers after being confined to his room.

He was not allowed to leave his bedroom as Zhang did not want him to meet her daughter, Jianyu, and the other tenants in the flat.

According to The New Paper, Jianyu did not like him and refused to speak to him or address him, although she ate the food he cooked.

The crabs which Zhang used Wang's money to buy were also finished by her and her daughter. They did not leave any crab for him, Wang told the police.

Sex and tattoos

The New Paper also reported Wang as telling the police that his love had "a high demand for sex".

According to Wang, he and Zhang had sex about two to three times a day when they first met. On his third and final visit to Singapore, they had sex every day for the first four days until she had her period.

They did not use any contraception.

Wang had Zhang's face and a rose tattooed on his upper back to express his love for her.

He also had a tattoo of a snake on his left upper arm to synbolise her viciousness and a tattoo of a skeleton and a heart to symbolise a "dead god" - referring to Zhang - that was slowly and gradually swallowing his heart.

"Lover was a spendthrift"

Murder suspect Wang Zhijian said in court that his lover, murder victim Zhang Meng, was a spendthrift who splurged his money on delicacies such as fish, prawns, crabs and durians.

He had brought in close to a total of $3,000 on the three separate occasions he visited Singapore, but the money was spent within a few days.

According to Shin Min Daily News, his money was spent within four days of him reaching Singapore on his first visit in July 2008.

Zhang Meng only started using her own money from the fifth day onwards. He believed that she knew he was out of cash.

Wang had to move in with his mother after he went back to Tianjing because his savings were depleted by his visit.

On his second trip in August the same year, he came to Singapore with the intention of getting a job here.

He brought along $800 but this was insufficient to pay for the $4,000 needed to apply for a work permit.

Wang turned to Zhang Meng for help, but she could not come up with the money.

On his third visit, he brought along $1,400, out of which $400 was splurged on delicacies by Zhang Meng within five days.

Walked around naked

Wang also revealed in court that he often went around naked when he was alone with Zhang Meng.

Wang is currently on trial for murdering three women in Sept 2009.

He allegedly went into a killing frenzy after he was taunted by his lover over money matters. Outraged by her taunts, he stabbed and slashed her and her daughter to death, before turning on another mother-daughter pair in another room.

There was only one survivor.

Chinese national Wang Zhijian, on trial for a triple murder, on Tuesday insisted again that he could not remember how he went about the attacks.

When confronted with the detailed statement he gave to the police after his arrest, Wang said his account was based on 'a feeling'.

Wang, 45, is accused of killing his lover, Madam Zhang Meng, 42, her daughter Feng Jianyu, 17, and their flatmate Yang Jie, 36.

Madam Yang's daughter Li Meilin, then 15, was also slashed, but she survived. All of them were from China.

'I had no intent to kill her': Yishun triple murderer

20120426.121432_yishunmurderer.jpg

AsiaOne
Thursday, Apr 26, 2012

SINGAPORE - Into his third day of trial, Chinese national Wang Zhijian continued to insist that he lost control of his mind and actions during the the vicious attacks that left three dead and one seriously injured.

He distanced himself from the crimes by saying that he could not remember the attacks, the Straits Times reported.

Cornered by the prosecution who questioned why then he could give detailed blow-by-blow accounts to the police of how he stabbed to death the three, he defended his stance by saying that the details were guesses based on 'a feeling'.

Wang stands accused of murdering his lover, Madam Zhang Meng, 42; her daughter Feng Jianyu, 17; and their flatmate Yang Jie, 36, in the Yishun flat all four were staying in.

He also attempted to kill Madam Yang's daughter Li Meilin, then 15, but she survived.

His statement to the police after the attack was so detailed that it included descriptions such as Wang's left knee being on the mattress while he thrust his knife in his right hand into Madam Zhang's abdomen at a 45-degree angle.

Wang said that his account was due to his imagination, intuition, or 'a feeling' of what things should have happened.

On Tuesday in court, Justice Chan Seng Ong commented that Wang should try his hand at the lottery, since his intuition was so accurate.

Wang also told the court he suffered a series of accidents in his youth, during some of which he lost consciousness.

These include two electrocutions, two traffic accidents, falling from a tree and a sudden fainting spell at home.

I am not sure if you notice the strange behavior of Wang Zijian. He seems very up front when facing the camera. It is as if he is very happy that he is finally getting the attention. If I am right, he was a no body with very low self esteem. Zhang Meng's treatment which he portray shows that he is henpecked. It reminds me of the henpecked killer Crippen.
