Filipina stabbed over 10 times in 'nasty, brutish' attack

A 30-year-old Filipina, Ms Roselyn Reyes Pascua, died after being stabbed 10 times in her chest and abdomen, once in the neck and twice in the vagina by her attacker.

The Straits Times reported today that the woman, believed to have been working as a prostitute, was found in a room at Peony Mansion in Bencoolen Street on March 15 last year.

The attack was described as nasty, brutish and short by a deputy public proscecutor who was speaking at the murder trial of Indian national Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan yesterday.

According to the English daily, Gopinathan does not deny stabbing Ms Pascua but claimed he acted under grave and serious provocation.

A forensic pathologist from the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), Dr Wee Keng Poh, said Ms Pascua died from excessive bleeding from a stab wound to her heart, but two other injuries could also have killed her.

A serious neck wound and a deep cut in her abdomen could also have been fatal, he said. Ms Pascua also had bruises to her faces and cuts to her lips.

Gopinathan was carrying Ms Pascua's mobile phone and some bloodstained money when he was arrested three days later. A receipt for a money transfer to India and a large amount of cash were also found on him.

The charge could be reduced to culpable homicide, and Gopinathan could face a jail term if the defence lawyers are successful. However, he will be sentenced to hang if convicted of murder. The trial continues today.

THEY entered the building separately, but took the lift together.

After nine minutes, Filipina Roselyn Reyes Pascua lay dead in a pool of blood, brutally stabbed in her rented room.

Indian national Gopinathan Nair Remadevi Bijukumar has been charged with her murder at Peony Mansion in Bencoolen Street on the evening of March 14 last year and is now on trial.

He faces the death penalty if found guilty.

The building's security cameras had captured the duo entering the premises separately.

The cameras also showed them entering the lift together.

The image captured on the video cameras was also the last time Ms Pascua, 30, was seen alive.

Video footage recovered from the building showed Gopinathan leaving the nine-storey apartment block alone nine minutes later at 7.18pm.

The 34-year-old Indian national's right arm was also seen extended towards his head, in a movement which suggested that he was wiping something off his face.

At around 3am the next day, Ms Pascua was found stabbed several times in the chest.

Mr Azlee Thaib, who was living in a room directly opposite Ms Pascua's, was awoken by the sounds of two Filipinas crying.

They pointed to Ms Pascua's room door, which was slightly ajar.

Mr Azlee pushed open the door of Ms Pascua's room - one of the apartment's eight rooms - and saw her lying face up in a pool of blood. She was wearing a black top and panties when she was found.

Mr Azlee then called the building's caretaker, who alerted the police.

Paramedics who attended to the emergency call pronounced Ms Pascua dead at 3.19am.

Gopinathan, a shipyard worker, was arrested for the murder on March 17 last year.

Also found in his possession: The deceased's mobile phone and blood-stained money.

Gruesome details

On the first day of his trial yesterday, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Andre Jumabhoy revealed gruesome details into the death.

Ms Pascua, who would fly here once a year, staying two to three months each time, suffered an attack that was "nasty, brutish and short", said the DPP.

The extent of the relationship between Gopinathan and Ms Pascua was not revealed yesterday.

Her occupation was also not mentioned during the hearing.

What is known, however, is that she was due to leave Singapore on March 1 last year, but decided to extend her stay for another month.

It was a decision that would cost her her life, said DPP Jumabhoy in his opening address in court yesterday.

Following her encounter with Gopinathan, Ms Pascua fell victim to a "ferocious" attack, said the prosecution.

She was stabbed in the neck, chest, abdomen and groin with a "tool with a sharp cutting edge".

The fatal blow came from a stab to the chest, the court heard.

That cut plunged to a depth of 10cm, cutting through the left lung before penetrating the heart, added DPP Jumabhoy.

The weapon was never recovered.

A post-mortem showed that Ms Pascua also had a bruise on the bridge of her nose.

There were also abrasions over her cheek and jaw - injuries the prosecution said was "consistent with her being punched repeatedly in the face".

The room where Ms Pascua was found provided "a wealth of forensic clues" pointing to Gopinathan's guilt, noted DPP Jumabhoy.

The accused's blood and DNA was recovered from the scene of the crime, pointing to the fact that he "was present in the room of the deceased at the time of her death," said DPP Jumabhoy.

Prosecution witness and forensic pathologist DrWee Keng Poh later told the court Ms Pascua died between 7pm and 8pm on the day of the incident.

During cross examination, Gopinathan's lawyer, MrShashi Nathan, told Dr Wee that his client had been involved in a fight with Ms Pascua.

They traded blows, which could explain the bruises and abrasions found on her face.

In response, DPP Jumabhoy said there were no injuries to Ms Pascua's upper or lower limbs.

The DPP asked Dr Wee: "Are there injuries to suggest she took part in physical violence?"

"No," replied the pathologist.

The hearing continues today.

Indian national Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan, 36, was convicted of the murder of Filipina Roselyn Reyes Pascua and given the mandatory death penalty on Wednesday.

Justice Choo Han Teck said that the prosecution had proved its case against Gopinathan beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ms Pascua was found in her room at Peony Mansion, Bencoolen Street on March 15, 2010.

She was stabbed multiple times in the chest, abdomen, neck and in her genital area, but the fatal injury was a stab that went through her ribs and into her heart.

Gopinathan did not deny stabbing Ms Pascua, who he said had solicited him for sex, but contended that he had acted under grave and sudden provocation.

In terms of the "Ah Neh" population living in SG, we see more men than women.
Opposite is true for Pinay/Pinoy ratio.

The appeal of an Indian national against his conviction for murdering a Filipina was dismissed on Thursday - but Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan still has a chance of escaping the hangman's noose.

The Court of Appeal upheld only his conviction under Section 300(c) of the Penal Code, for homicide that is carried out with the intention of causing bodily injury which would ordinarily be sufficient to cause death.

If proposed changes to give judges discretion in murder sentencing are passed in Parliament, the 36-year-old may escape the death sentence.

In April, Bijukumar, a shipyard worker, was convicted of murdering Ms Roselyn Reyes Pascua, 30, in March 2010. Her body was found in her rented room at Peony Mansion in Bencoolen Street with multiple stab wounds.
