13-year-old uncovers nature's secret

13_year_old_uncovers_nature_s_secret-topImage.jpg

NEW YORK - A 13-year-old has uncovered nature's secret, in particular, how trees gather more sunlight - even in the dark winter months - using a mathemathical principle known as the Fibonacci sequence.

Aidan Dawyer stumbled upon the discovery during a winter hike. Mesmerized by the spiral pattern of the tree branches, he sought to investigate why.

His investigative path led him to a mathematical forumula called the "divine number", which applies to many things in nature, Dawyer wrote, in an article on the American Museum of Natural History's website.

Briefly, the Fibonacci sequence starts with the numbers 0 and 1, each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two – 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13…. These numbers, when put in ratios, happen to show up in the patterns of branches and leaves on trees.

After establishing that the tree patterns were not random, Dawyer then applied that knowledge to solar panel arrangements.

Dawyer built his own "solar tree", right in his own backyard. His experiment managed to prove that a "tree-branch" arrangement increased the amount of solar power harnessed as compared to when panels are laid flat.

Dawyer himself wrote: “The tree design takes up less room than flat-panel arrays and works in spots that don’t have a full southern view. It collects more sunlight in winter. Shade and bad weather like snow don’t hurt it because the panels are not flat. It even looks nicer because it looks like a tree. A design like this may work better in urban areas where space and direct sunlight can be hard to find.”

For his breakthrough, Dawyer earned himself a Young Naturalist award for 2011 at the American Museum of Natural History.

Not only that, he also got a provisional US patent and interest from "entities" eager to commercialize his innovation, reported the Northport Patch.

Yup, I agree. Singapore's education system will never produce such talents. So who is ultimately at fault for not producing such talents and requires importing foreign talents? Fucking PAP!!! And who voted for these idiots? Same fucking 60% daft voters.

I first read about the fibonacci sequence in a finance book. really amazing stuff. IIRC, mathematicians during the renaissance used it to derive the pi and the golden ration (1.618)..

The parents will probably be called up during Parent-Teacher-Meeting session and got lectured on how distracted his son is blah blah blah, maybe even recommend to see counsellor ... then maybe go see psychiatrist .... then maybe confirmed problem kid .... then migrate, made good his studies and come back and tell sgp'reans how he was a drop out . Thought this sounds familiar....

You can't motivate people to use their higher brain functions like creativity and abstract thinking using money or fear. That's something PAP and Kwan Yew will never understand.

He will be classified as hyperactive in his earlier primary school years and by mid primary, an EM3 troublemaker. By the time he hits secondary, he'll be a normal technical student bounded for ITE.

No wonder after paying the ministers millions, their performance goes down the drain. We must give them huge pay cut!

This is what a Sinkie with only a secondary education could produce just by pursuing his passion:

Good thing this boy is not a Singaporean, he will be bog down in some tuition center somewhere follow by piano lessons. PAP wanted only human batteries to fuel the economy, in turn entrench their power.
People who are smart will br absorbed into their corrupte system and those who not listen to them will not make it far in this island.

if he is singaporean, his scholarship will be given to foreigner, because they produce jobs and wealth to pap, and he is only good for canon odder in NS. what genius left in him, will be suck out during NS anyway.

tough to compare the different environments. sg is a tropical island with not much land and no four seasons. this kid learn about trees in his hikes deep in the woods and become curious about how they get sunlight in winter. can't really duplicate the environment in sg. he would hike the bukit timah reserve, get bitten by mosquitoes and come out all sweaty and stressed out and vow never to do it again. perhaps, he would be curious about how trees in the jungle compete for sunlight and come to the same conclusion. but yes, too much pressure and pleasure from urban life plus the rigor of sg's schooling system will kill any spare time and curiosity a kid has. a reason why america will still produce thinkers, inventors and entrepreneurs.

Indeed, it is the environment, but I don't think its the tropical versus big natural environment you are talking about. The stiffling school system has to be blamed for it instead. How many school kids in the Singapore really ever wonder why the sky is blue, why trees are grown in a certain ways, why LKY and PAP is the best? To foster questions, and given answers to all this would mean you need to have an environment that question everything and be given a proper answer to it. Not, "its in the textbook, just memorise it" or "We know best just follow".

pls lah, even if sinkieland has winter and there are trees around for such curious investigation, sinkie still will not care, they only care how to bend down and let the govt screw them while complaining in the forum.

The achievement, buy the highest, sell the lowest & bullshit about the long term, holding prospect of the investments. Not to mention, to warn the people about 'dark clouds' are looming, while it is filling up to the waste in 'water'.

That way, if he ever gets lynched in SG, he can be safely sent to US or Scotland in a customosed SQ Boing 777 complete with F16 and F15 escort complete with KC135 to live under the protective umbrella of those organizations?

If they offer him a senior management job - given he's bailed them out billions of our money - not hard for him to apply for resident visa

I suppose it is time our education system goes through a revamp. It was started by engineers and we know that those people are hardly creative. What does engineers knows about teaching? No wonder our education is so systematic like machinery.
