For many years, I was on the impression that, Singapore Citizens, once renounced their citizenship for other nations, it’s very difficult, if not impossible for them to regret their decision and want to be back to Singapore, even as PRs.
Today, I read about the generosity of Miss Elaine Low, who donated 1 million dollars to Japan for the earthquake and tsunami victims. I salute such generosity from a Singaporean, I’m proud of you! (Source: Today, 17 Mar 2011, Singaporean donates S$1million by Neo Chai Chin)
On the other hand, I’m a bit disturbed to read that, her father was actually a Singaporean who renounced his citizenship to become an Indonesia citizen and he is now back as a Singapore PR. Below is quoted from the report:
“… Mr Low was Singaporean but become an Indonesian citizen in 1996 and is now a permanent resident here …”
Why is this Mr Low allowed to become Singapore PR after he has renounced his citizenship? Does this mean that anyone of us, we can easily renounced our Singapore citizenship for greener pasture elsewhere and some years later come back as Singapore PR to become a part of the “Foreign Talents”
Can ICA comment and confirm on this, so that we can be assured that we can still be PR after we surrender our pink ICs? Can we renounce at the age of 17 to escape National Service and come back to Singapore as PR some years later?
Or is this privilege only applicable to affluent and rich people like Mr Low, which Forbes ranked him as the 7th richest man in Indonesia, with an estimated net worth of S$3.3 billion?
ICA, please comment. Thank You!
.

Does the Singapore law say you cannot return as PR?

The idea of sovereign states and citizenship will be under review in the 21st century.

If they have another $300 million to spare they might name
Changi Airport after him or maybe the Istana.
