Man accused of bribery
By Elena Chong
A MAN was charged on Wednesday with corruptly offering money to a traffic cop in return for not taking action against him for committing traffic offences. Gwee Teck Hee, 57, owner of Kao Hong Contractor, allegedly offered unspecified sums of money to Sergeant Mohammad Sufyan Mohd Safie along Geylang Road on June 12 this year.
He was allegedly using a mobile phone while driving when he was stopped by the police officer who found that he had committed other traffic offences as well. Gwee then allegedly tried to bribe the officer by offering him money but the officer rejected it. A pre-trial conference has been set for Oct 14. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years.
