great! just got my iPad 2 and typing the 1st text on sbf. it's historic and i wish to record this event for posterity. stood in line for 3 hours yesterday and finally was ushered in with only 32g and 64g wifi and wifi + cdma black models left. took the 32g wifi black and never look back.

much lighter than the original for sure. the weight factor can translate to better wrist comfort. the older model was tough on wrists and created ergonomics discomfort. since it's slimmer now, i can hold it with 4 fingers (index and middle on the back and thumb and 4th spread eagle holding the bottom edge) on one hand and type/touch with another. processing power is better and definitely faster response. already downloaded tower madness and getting to 4th stage. watched all videos on gap tsunami on yahoo and ran all CNN stories with videos on the same tragedy... all in less than 2 hours. there was a 4 min clip on a jap house undergoing 2 mins of continuous shaking. so far it works as advertised. no pictures yet on the hardware, but you can see it on apple's site. too busy playing with this thing/toy. took pictures of long line that i was in. it was about 500 long. i was #251 as there were apple employees counting people waiting. many foreigners flew in the night before just to get into line. they came from hk, china, japan, russia, europe, canada, arsetralia, etc.

iTab Galaxy wins hands down.

the galaxy tab is not as good and sleek as the motorola xoom. the xoom runs a new version of android called honeycomb (3.0) optimized for tablets and it's superb. the tab runs the older 2.x android for smartphones.

i toyed with all 3 and the iPad 2 has more apps ready for downloads than the xoom. the xoom though is a beast in terms of power. settled with the iPad 2 because it's better for my ergonomic comfort, plus it's cheaper.

Yah, price point and apps seems like a big deciding factor. The galaxy was selling for $999 outright over here. Its definitely higher then the ipad. Whether price for Honeycomb devices would come down or if there are enough apps on the android market is still pretty early to tell. I have a feeling that when that starts to happen the Ipad would have cement its lead and become too entrenched. Apple is smart enough to realised this and they have done this before with the ipod.

Read many american customers couldn't get one because of limited stocks.

Hope Apple does a better job this time or it's unlikely that Sporeans will get to see the iPad 2 any time soon. :(

Apple's iPad 2 prompts Samsung to improve 'inadequate' parts of Galaxy Tab 10.1

Samsung is headed back to the drawing board for its forthcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 to improve "inadequate" parts and reconsider pricing after Apple unveiled its iPad 2 this week.

Lee Don-joo, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division, said the thinner and lighter design of the iPad 2, at the same price points as its predecessor, presents an issue for his company and its forthcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1. The tablet, named for its 10.1-inch screen, was unveiled at this year's Mobile World Congress and runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

"We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate," Lee said of the forthcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 in an interview with Yonhap News Agency. "Apple made it very thin."

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 shown off last month had a weight of 21 ounces and was 0.44 inches thick. Apple on Wednesday unveiled the iPad 2, arriving in stores next Friday, March 11, with a weight of 1.33 pounds, or 21.28 ounces, and a thickness of 8.8mm, or just 0.35 inches.

Lee also said that Samsung will reconsider its pricing for the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab. No prices or release date for the product have been announced.

Samsung was among a number of companies called out this week by Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs. In his surprise return to the stage on Wednesday, Jobs said if 2010 was the year of the iPad, 2011 may be the "year of the copycats" with competitors looking to replicate Apple's success with the iPad.


With regard to Samsung, Jobs repeated a quote that gained much attention, in which a Samsung executive was originally reported to have said that sales of its 7-inch Galaxy Tab, released last fall, were "quite small." However, Samsung later clarified that their executive said Galaxy Tab sales were "quite smooth," and that the original quote was incorrect.

Jobs, on stage Wednesday, repeated the allegedly incorrect quote as part of his presentation. "A lot of these were probably on the shelf by the end of the year," Jobs also said of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab.

it was obviously clear that cantonese-speaking syndicates had paid line-waiters to line up for hours to secure 2 iPads each. i noticed a lot of cantonese speaking buyers waiting in line, and when they came out, all had bags of 2 in both hands. russians too. they were buying them for their syndicate bosses who would resell them in international grey markets for higher prices. heard from my friend in a manhattan store alone, there were 35 together in 1 group waiting at the door the morning before. and they didn't understand english.

not too many. interestingly the model that was sold out first at the store i was in line for was the at&t 16g model. that's the us model that can work in countries running hspa and hspa+. the next models that were sold out were the at&t 32g then 64g models. apparently many of these units will be going out of the u.s. the models that were left when i got mine were mostly verizon models, which can run only in countries using cdma.

ipad 3 will not be out until same time next year. might as well wait for the ipad 4 or ipad 5 or ipad 6. wait, there's an ipad-infinity coming out in the year 2222. it can wipe your arse and massage your foot. might as well wait till then.

black vs. white

so far i'm happy with black. my 1st choice was white, but since they sold out all whites on opening day, i settled for black. and once you go black you don't look back.

the black bezel actually helps with movie viewing as you would normally watch a movie in dimlit room or with lights out. the movie frame blends well with a black bezel. as for a white bezel, you can easily see the edge and the whiteness dominates the view, making it look like a picture frame. moreover, the screen is black anyway, and therefore blends better with a black bezel.

if you're getting the ipad2, get the smart cover. it is worth it at usd 39.99.

poly with a felt feel. it snaps on the ipad easily and snugly with a magnetic strip. and when you open the cover, the ipad turns on... and vice versa when you close it.
