No World Cup for S'pore?

A JOINT SingTel-Starhub bid has failed to secure them the rights to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, a joint press statement from them said.

The statement said that this was in spite the fact that the bid 'would provide Fifa with an increase in value from four years ago for the rights to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, while ensuring that it would remain affordable to the broadest number of our customers'.

'In an attempt to reach a value that is acceptable to Fifa to bring World Cup to Singapore, the price offered to Fifa would sacrifice all World Cup margins for both SingTel and StarHub while keeping the price affordable for consumers,' the statement went on to say. 'However, we have yet to reach an agreement with Fifa.'

Earlier this month, The Straits Times reported that at least 202 countries have received the green light from Fifa to beam June 2010's World Cup football matches in their territories, but not Singapore.

It was thought at that time that the two parties had submitted two rival bids but from today's press statement it is clear that it was a joint bid. There is big money riding on these broadcast rights. The matches are expected to attract a total of 29 billion viewers worldwide.

The only silver lining in the clouds for viewers in Singapore is Fifa's ruling to make four of the most important World Cup games free-to-air. The opening game between host South Africa and Mexico on June 11, the semi-finals on July 6 and 7, and the final on July 11 will be available for free.

is this true? what really happened?

if true, reading between the lines, i hope fifa is unhappy over the "remain affordable to the broadest number of our customers" clause. ie singtel-starhub trying to screw us again. after all, the last world cup rtm2 was showing live but starhub scrambled the signal. so can't be that broadcasters not paying fifa enough, rite?

I've stopped watching football since they removed it from free-to-air. Find something better to do with your lives.

why Malaysia watch for free? bcos sponsored by bookies? Singapore Pools should support the bid too.

Kuala Lumpur - As football fans around the world wait for the World Cup finals next year in South Africa, illegal bookies in Malaysia are already preparing to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars from punters.

Football betting is big money in Malaysia, and every year a large chunk of the estimated 10 billion dollars made by illegal gaming syndicates comes from bets on international football matches.

All forms of sports betting in Malaysia are illegal, except for horse racing. But football bookies, in particular, have continued to flourish and go undetected every year by offering betting odds online.

'In the old days, when everything was manual and they used papers and pens (to take bets) it was much easier to detect, but now everything is online, so it gets more challenging,' said an officer from the triads, betting and vice department at the national Bukit Aman police headquarters.

what? from shitting to a hole in the ground to palace HDB, we cannot afford to pay FIFA?

what is PAP doing?

it will be real funny, if singapore cannot see world cup.

when world cup in asia, the asian team did very well, due to referee kelong, now the world cup in africa, african team will do very well, put the money on them, very likely fifa will kelong again.

U misunderstood the meaning, there is no such clause. Starhub or Singtel just doesn't want to come up with too high a bid coz they cant make the money back hence keeping it affordable to customers. Its not a clause FIFA doesn't care, they just want money. Same as Starhub and Singtel.

And the difference here and in MY is the sponsorship there is high, they can easily find some corporate sponsors to cover most of the cost. SG, sponsors dun think its worth it, we only have a population of 4million+. U pay more sponsorship money, also only advertise to 4million+ pple. MY population more then 6 times that. If U are rich MNC, U want to sponsor the WC broadcast here or in MY?
