OK.. latest guess on what went down based on various contributors.. it was definitely a friendly fire incident.
The tanks are ID'ed as Ukrainian based on turret design and digital camo pattern.
The group of soldiers had been posing around a stuck and abandoned Russian armoured personnel carrier for photos.
As the tank was approaching, the crew thought they were Russians who just unloaded from the APC. Since the "special operation" began, there's been a lot of paranoia in Ukraine about Russian saboteurs who pose as ukrop soldiers. So the tankie crew thought they caught Russian spies in the act.
In the aftermath video, a forummer who spoke Ukrainian said the guy filming mention something about a "persecutor". Meaning the tank crew will be investigated for the friendly fire incident.
An American vet added that friendly fire incidents are very common in modern war. By his estimate 20 to 30% of American casualties in Middle East were blue on blue.
Couple of takeaway points:
It's amazing the video clip was shared by the Ukrainians - given it would be incredibly bad for their morale. Troop discipline must be terrible.
The Ukrainian propaganda department was very quick to spin it in their favour. The aftermath video clearly showed this was bullshit. Makes you wonder if you can believe any shit you read about the war.
Very unfortunate. Need to court-martial the tank crew, the troops had blue armbands on.

Twenty-five women and girls - some as young as 14 - were “systematically raped” by Russian troops during the occupation of the town of Bucha with nine now pregnant, Ukraine’s human rights commissioner said on Tuesday.
Mounting reports about victims of rape in Ukraine are emerging as the United Nations warned of widespread sexual violence during the Russian invasion.
“Nine of them are pregnant,” Lyudmyla Denisova, Ukraine’s human rights commissioner, told the BBC. “Russian soldiers told them they would rape them to the point where they wouldn’t want sexual contact with any man, to prevent them from having Ukrainian children.
“A 25-year-old woman called us to say her 16-year-old sister was raped in the street in front of her.”

The Ukrainian government still has no idea about the full scale of sexual violence in the towns and villages that were occupied by Russians forces, she added.
“To calculate the number of sexual crimes is impossible at the moment because not everyone has come to us. Not everyone is willing to talk.”
More evidence of rape in the territories occupied by the Russians earlier in the war came to light on Tuesday.
Current Time, a Russian-language media outlet funded by Radio Free Europe, released a video of a middle-aged woman revealing that her daughter was raped in their village of Mala Rohan in the northeastern Kharkiv region.
She said her daughter, who was not identified, was picked off the street and raped by a Russian soldier at the local school.
“He took her to a classroom on the second floor and was raping her all night. He cut her cheek and neck,” she said.
The woman said her daughter was too distressed to speak to reporters directly.
The United Nations on Monday warned of an increased risk of sexual violence, calling for an independent investigation into the reports.
Sima Bahous, executive of the UN agency dealing with gender equality and women empowerment, said during an address at the Security Council that allegations of rape and sexual violence “must be independently investigated to ensure justice and accountability”.

Americans Are “In Charge” of the War Says French Journalist Who Returned From Ukraine

A French journalist who returned from Ukraine after arriving with volunteer fighters told broadcaster CNews that Americans are directly “in charge” of the war on the ground.
The assertion was made by Le Figaro senior international correspondent Georges Malbrunot.
Malbrunot said he had accompanied French volunteer fighters, two of whom had previously fought against ISIS.
“I had the surprise, and so did they, to discover that to be able to enter the Ukrainian army, well it’s the Americans who are in charge,” said Malbrunot.
Adding that he and the volunteers “almost got arrested” by the Americans, who asserted they were in charge, the journalist then revealed that they were forced to sign a contract “until the end of the war.”
“And who is in charge? It’s the Americans, I saw it with my own eyes,” said Malbrunot, adding, “I thought I was with the international brigades, and I found myself facing the Pentagon.”
Malbrunot also mentioned America providing Ukraine with switchblade suicide drones, something highlighted by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a tweet that revealed Ukrainian soldiers were being trained to use the devices in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Citing a French intelligence source, Malbrunot also tweeted that British SAS units “have been present in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, as did the American Deltas.”
Russia is apparently well aware of the “secret war” being waged in Ukraine by foreign commandos who have been in the region since February.
Both the United States and the UK have publicly asserted that there won’t be “boots on the ground” in Ukraine, but apparently there has been a US-UK military presence since the start of the war.
“Polls showed in the run up to the war the overwhelming majority of Americans wanted our government to stay out of it but our leaders know best and are more than happy to risk World War III in defense of Ukraine’s puppet regime,” writes Chris Menahan.
