Such a Singaporean is already above average because majority of Singaporeans are in never ending debt. So considered successful relative to most Singaporeans liao. Are you better off? Then you're a successful Singaporean liao.

If you retire, you will die sooner or later. Most retirees may provide consultancy in the business they were in.

After downsizing, the burger will get enough cash for retirements and fully paid 2-room old folks BTO. Unfortunately, PAP many elections of brain washing about HDB appreciating value has became hard to wash off from their old supporters.

1. She can rent out 2 rooms in her 4 room HDB. Keep smallest room locked to maintain pretense of owner occupied flat. Depending on area, can fetch about $1,300 per month or RM3,900.
2. Use 150k CPF to buy CPF life. At 65, can collect about $850 per month or RM2,550 - for life.
3. Total monthly income for doing nothing = RM 6,450.
4. Can easily rent 2 bedroom condo in JB for RM1,500 per month. Monthly expenses should not be more than RM2,000.
5. Get a basic Perodua Axia Automatic for less than $13,000. Learn how to drive. 60+ then take driving test, no problem, just pay a little bit of coffee money to make sure 100% pass test at first attempt, then drive carefully.
6. When RTS is ready, every 30 days drive to JB Sentral, park and ride to Singapore. Can stay in unoccupied small bedroom of her HDB flat for one or two days or just straight back to JB on the same day.
7. Still have RM3,000 per month left for discretionary spending without touching the rest of her $300,000 cash savings. That is $12,000 every year for holidays abroad.
8. Use half of her $300,000 cash to invest in strong dividend paying stocks.

Never ever followed her numerous posts and the people who responded to them - both are equally annoying for blanketing the forum with their nonsense. A brief glance seems to indicate that she bought a house in JB looking for price appreciation, but ended up losing money and then kpkb.
Renting is a much better idea. If SGD appreciates, the rental expenses in JB becomes cheaper and the rental income from HDB flat becomes more when converted to MYR - win win. Most Sinkies can't see beyond their nose and cannot think out of the box.

Success is a very subjective matter, comparing success is a fool's errand.

How about an ordained Buddhist monk at that age, who earns/owns nothing but his basic necessities are provided for by donors? Is that a success or a failure?

Good calculation. But for a 63-yr old to move to JB is likely not an option.

If he has total peace of mind, I would reckon success.

Based upon my latest calculations savings of at least $7 million are required to retire comfortably in Singapore.
