Dramatically Slowed Down

SINGAPORE — It was a decision that could have cost him a SEA Games medal, but Singapore marathon runner Ashley Liew has no regrets in slowing down to almost a crawl to allow his fellow competitors, who had mistakenly followed the wrong route, to recover.

At one point during the early stages of Sunday’s 42.195km race, Liew suddenly found himself leading the 12-strong field after his rivals took the wrong path. But instead of taking advantage of his lead, which was about 50m, the Singaporean decided to wait for them.

Liew, 28, eventually finished eighth in 2hrs 44min 02secs. The marathon was won by compatriot Soh Rui Yong in 2:34.56, ahead of silver medallist Boothung Srisung (2:35.09) of Thailand and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thanh Hoang, who settled for the bronze (2:37.10).

The incident had gone almost unnoticed, and yesterday, Liew told TODAY that his gesture of sportsmanship had been inspired by British Olympic cycling champion Bradley Wiggins, who waited for his competitors to catch up during the 2012 Tour de France after their tyres had been punctured by nails and tacks on the road in what was believed to be an act of sabotage by rivals.

“I found myself in pole position. I looked back and all 11 of them were not there, and I dramatically slowed down to wait for them,” Liew told TODAY.

“I would not have felt comfortable taking advantage of the situation as I am a big fan of sportsmanship. In fact, I was sharing with the other athletes how important sportsmanship is.”

Couple Of Points:

1. Fellow competitors having punctured tyres as a result of sabotage is an entirely different situation from fellow competitors taking a wrong path.

2. He eventually finished 8th. It appears that he was able to dramatically slow down but unable to dramatically speed up.

Errrr.... i was there watching... it was not his day... the slow down did not cause him drop to 8th place. He was just slow that day. At the first loop at east coast he was just 20m behind the pack... but as each loop pogressed he slipped further back.

He should be awarded an honorary Gold Medal!!

Why didn't SNOC award him that?, he did a honour for Singapore, to slow down, for the other countries competitors who took a wrong route, he was winning, 1st.....but since, he was so kind, he came in 8th..

Sinkies are born to lose, this sinkie is the epitome example of that.even when a act of god and lky's blessings hands him the palms of victory,he would rather lose

They have no competitive spirit in them with a desire to win at all cost not only for the pride of a nation, at least for themselves. They are so programmed slaves of the education system & the government.

It would have been a good story only if he had "dramatically slowed down" and still won eventually.

I was visiting HDB land & got the impression that Sporean's were already celebrating National Day because I saw so many red flags & large posters. Then when I took a closer look it was SEA games related.

How much is this circus going to Sporeans:confused: Was there any debate on the budget allotted or will there be another YOG like fiasco when they went over budget by 300%.

At first, I thought, they were put up by those Taoist Temples, having their festivals nearby , but on closer inspection, could not actually make out, what it says on the flags...but S.E.A...then, ah so!....

There was a Party Affiliate RC, where the flags were adorn on the block....ah so!...

But most people....don't even bother...ah so!

Newsflash: the pappies spent more than 300 million dollars on the SEA Games, and they couldn't even get the marathon marshalling done right.
