BEIJING: A senior Chinese Communist Party official who was a close aide to former president Hu Jintao has been removed from his post, state media said on Wednesday (Dec 31), amid a corruption investigation.

Ling Jihua - whose son died in a Ferrari crash in Beijing in 2012 - was dismissed as the head of the United Front Work Department of the party's Central Committee, the official party mouthpiece the People's Daily said in a one-line report.

Anti-corruption authorities have opened an investigation into Ling for "suspected serious disciplinary violations" - normally a euphemism for corruption - the official Xinhua News Agency reported last week. He is also vice chairman of the national committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a top advisory body, although it was not immediately clear if he had also been removed from that post.

Ling found himself in the media spotlight after the death of his son Ling Gu in March 2012. Two young women who were also in the Ferrari - one nude and the other partly clothed - were seriously injured. Despite a media blackout surrounding the crash, internet users questioned how the son of a party official could afford a car worth a reported five million yuan (around US$800,000).

Ling Jihua was removed from a key party post and given a less high-profile position after the accident, which added to public perceptions in China of corrupt and high-living officials.

A number of his relatives have also fallen, with the party in June announcing an investigation into his brother Ling Zhengce, a former provincial politician, for "serious discipline violations". News magazine Caixin reported on Monday that his brother-in-law Gu Yuanxiu had also been taken away for investigation on the same vague charges.

The Communist Party's anti-corruption drive began after Xi Jinping took its helm two years ago, with the powerful former security chief Zhou Yongkang being the highest-ranking official ensnared.

The campaign has netted high-level "tigers" as well as low-level "flies", but critics say the faction-ridden ruling party has failed to introduce systemic reforms to prevent corruption such as public disclosure of assets.

This guy, along with other PRC generals, are all supposedly earning much less than our SAF generals, elected politicians and public civil servants. Hence, these PRC officials are routinely found to be vast richer than they should be, based on their public servant salaries.

Still think our overpaid ministers and civil servants are the world's most expensive, after taking into account public monies siphoned away by these much cheaper but corrupted non-PAP politicians and civil servants?

so the idea of millions dollars ministers is to be on par with corrupted officials

The point is that overall, the government pays far less to the million dollar ministers and civil servants, as compared to the hundreds of millions siphoned off by corrupted officials who are pretending to be saints happy with their low income and high expectations of public service.

Not sure if they would, but the chances of it happening will be higher. Just look at any poorly paid politiican, including those in the First World. Even in the US, politicians are often associated with being crooked and self-serving despite drawing low salary.

The link below shows a list of lowly paid US politicians who have ties with Goldman Sachs. Evidently, collecting low salaries for their public careers is not really appealing, despite the pretentious show of putting duty above self.

Corruption has nothing to do with paying a person a high salary.

Look at our civil servant and government related corruption cases, from Teh Cheang Wan to the latest ST Marine, these are highly paid people.

So, corruption has to do with greed.

Therre is no system in the world that will have 0% corruption, if there it what you are nitpicking at. Our current system ensures that corruption is low, not non-existent. If there is no corruption at all, what do we need CPIB for?

So, you agreed that corruption has to do with greed and NOT with someone being highly paid?

CPIB reports to who?
