Shocking, We Have Too Many Lawyers, How Come?

Because of two reasons:

1) More law schools/courses e.g. SMU.

2) Influx of FT law practitioners.

In all honesty, you don't really need law education to go far in the legal industry here. Look at Yong Pung How.

Supply exceeds demand is good.economics 101.if supply is more than demand, then the x axis where y and z intersects goes lower....price points goes lower.

and since Ministars pay is pegged to the top echelon of the private sector.....soon lawyer salaries will be dropping like a rock....then PAP will have to revise their pay or come up with more bullshyt.

If I say sell your lan cheow service to MILF you will laugh at me.

Women are stealing jobs from men and are rich, educated and chee bye itchy too. Who don't love a good fuck?

Men do that all the time and now women are having it all too.

Be a gigolo make more money than lawyers.

Technology influences these numbers so the forecasts can never be accurate. Besides a gloomy forecast can actually result in a severe shortage.

His statements identify a curious thing ie that despite the record number of singkies aiming to study law overseas he is assuming that the same number will then seek to come back to Singapore for their training contracts. That implies that singkies who are smart enough to get into the 16 recognised law universities in the UK will either not
Apply for training contracts in the UK or will apply and not get in. Surely then it means that our pool of smart singkies cannot compete with other graduates in the UK all vying for a limited number of spaces available for training contracts there and seek to come back instead. The ones who do get in can spend two years training, then qualify as registered lawyers and come back after a couple of years experience in the UK. They won't have to retrain just do the local exams and they will get registered. The foreign lawyers locally have all gone through the same process and in fact the UK has been struggling to find placements for a heavily oversubscribed profession:

http://juniorlawyers.lawsociety.org.uk/node/36230

But as it is only the creme de creme from our excellent education system heading into only the very best of UK universities for law surely they can shine if they are keen to get training experience and a few years under their belts.

I also checked with a local recruiter yesterday and she said that actually the demand for lawyers is currently quite high in Singapore especially for juniors ie those with 1-3 years experience - if it's a singkie even better as MNCs are all actively trying to find those with that kind of experience. Don't overlook the fact that the foreign lawyers referred to are also predominantly working in roles that require long hours churning documents and closing transaction deals - it is especially siong when they realise they are pretty much making the deals happen for bankers who are rewarded vastly more money than them.

As a junior it is hardly a rewarding lifestyle in the early years and most people give up. So even the FT lawyers who are here typically are on secondment and will eventually head back or to another destination.

I predict a few vacancies for politicians so better brush up on you hand shaking skills:smile:

The old fart is going to re-join his wife & Sporeans are getting fed up with the current batch of yes men. An accounting degree will be an asset because whoever takes over will face a financial mess.

I honestly think that in this day and age or rapid technological and social change, it is pretty much impossible to know what the world will be like in 5 year's time.

If I had told you in 2008 that Nokia and Blackberry would be dead and buried by 2012, I would have been laughed out of town.

In short, what you are implying is that we do not need the PAP nor are they credited for achieving anything because everything that will happen will happen.

Not at all the PAP is probably the only political party in the world that can make the future happen.

....I was told before many lawyers don't practice and did something else after they became lawyers so how did we end up with too many lawyers? Something fishy no?

Nothing fishy but alot of wayang. The paps allowed too many foreigners to practise law in sinkieland and the profession is now saturated. Law students unable to find work in their home countries, flock to sinkieland to work in law firms. Locals holding law degrees are edged out as these foreign law firms also prefer to employ their own people.

Go to Raffles Place and other financial districts in sinkie land during lunch time and count the number of foreigners walking by and you will wonder whether sinkie land is sinkies or for foreigners.

It is now a case of "you reap what you sow" for the paps. The Minister is worried because he knows that the open door foreign immigration policy is like a time bomb.

Relax! Our ancestors were all foreigners once upon a time.

PAP's management of the lawyer and doctor professions have been disastrous, after they opened the floodgates to foreigners.

They basically screwed up their own policies implemented years earlier.

its obvious they can make things happen but they cant forsee the consequences as can be seen by how this country has gone down the toilets in the past 10 years.
