Big misses: Thiago Silva and Neymar will both be missing against Germany in the semi finals

Jose Mourinho is still backing Brazil to win the World Cup - even after losing star man Neymar to injury and captain Thiago Silva to suspension ahead of their semi final clash with Germany.
And the Chelsea manager believes the loss of PSG centre back Silva will be more of a problem against the Germans than that of Neymar.
The Brazilian captain picked up a needless yellow card for a challenge on goalkeeper David Ospina in the 2-1 win over Colombia that ruled him out of the semi final after also being booked in the group stage draw with Mexico.

Unless Brazil can come up with a MIRACLE, it will have to say good-bye. The German tanks will totally demolish their forwards and devastate their defence.

Lionel Messi remastered - Argentina captain has tweaked aspects of his game, but by lighting up the World Cup in Brazil he has proved he is still as devastating as ever
The attacker has scored four goals in four games so far and has been named man of the match in each of Argentina's matches
The shadow of Diego Maradona hangs over Messi after he led Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986
But if this new, remodelled Messi repeats Maradona's fete in Brazil, he will be right on par with his mentor

By JAMIE CARRAGHER

We are seeing the evolution of Lionel Messi in this World Cup. The new version is not as dynamic, but is equally devastating.
He has become more of an old-fashioned playmaker, with everything coming through him. He’s on the prowl, smelling danger, waiting for the opportunity to pounce and to come alive at the point of maximum impact, but conserving his energy until such an opening presents itself.
He doesn’t seem to be running as much, he is waiting for the ball. His running stats were the lowest on the pitch against Switzerland, which is evidence of the change in his game - but he caused maximum trouble and won the match for Argentina.

Messi...He is the most important player in his team and, while he has been in the shadow of Diego Maradona, who won the World Cup single-handedly in 1986, Messi can go some way to emulating him if he can take this team to victory in the land of their fierce South American rivals.
His Argentinian attacking colleagues have been, in the main, disappointing. Aguero isn’t fully fit, Higuain has struggled, Lavezzi has shown flashes and, apart from the Messi-inspired winner against Switzerland, Di Maria has failed to show. So Messi has a heavy weight to carry.

Mats Hummels sounded a warning to the rest of the World Cup as Germany became the first team in history to reach four straight semi-finals.

The central defender soared to down feeble France in Rio de Janeiro and grab his second goal of the tournament.
And Hummels insisted afterwards that Germany are ready to go two steps further than they have in their recent history and claim the trophy back here in eight days' time.

Van Persie's Misses Nearly Cost Dutch at World Cup

SALVADOR, Brazil — Jul 5, 2014, 9:10 PM ET

On the same ground where Robin van Persie's spectacular diving header earned him the nickname the Flying Dutchman, the Netherlands striker fell flat against Costa Rica on Saturday.

Van Persie missed two chances from close range in stoppage time in a 0-0 draw before the Dutch prevailed 4-3 in penalty shootout to set up a World Cup semifinal match against Argentina.

"Those misses could have been very costly," Van Persie said. "But our win is all that matters now."

One of those chances was heart stopping.

The ball was crossed from the left, two Dutch players failed to get to it, and it fell to Van Persie close to the back post. He shot, but the ball hit a Costa Rican defender on the goal line, ricocheted from the crossbar and bounced out.

"It's bizarre," Van Persie said. "We had too many chances. You have to stay strong and focused in such circumstances. We had to work hard to win this game."

While Van Persie sputtered, teammate Arjen Robben was a constant threat against a dogged Costa Rica squad as he left behind a diving controversy surrounding the Netherlands' second-round victory over Mexico.

Van Persie and Robben both scored twice in Salvador in the 5-1 win over Spain at the start of the tournament and have three goals each so far. Van Persie's flying header looped over a stranded Iker Casillas on Spain's goal and ended up in the net — arguably the most spectacular goal so far in the tournament.

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal said the missed chances could have backfired, with Costa Rica nearly taking a lead in last minutes of extra time.

"I don't know how many opportunities we had in the game, but that goes to show that scoring a goal is crucial in the game of football," Van Gaal said. "If you miss so many opportunities, the opponent could walk away and beat you, out of nowhere."
