Film magnate and philanthropist Run Run Shaw passed away on Tuesday. He was 107.

Shaw, born in 1907, founded the Shaw Organisation with his brother in 1926 in Shanghai. Four years later, the firm became Shaw Studios, which grew to be Asia's largest studio by 1958.

He launched TVB in November 1967, and as controlling shareholder, Run Run Shaw attracted top talents to the station, ushering in what many call the golden age of TV entertainment in Hong Kong.

His studio produced more than 1,000 films and invested numerous others, including Ridley Scott's cult classic Blade Runner, according to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which gave him a Special Award just last month.

After a 44-year career, Run Run Shaw stepped down from all his TVB posts in December 2011. In March that year, Shaw sold his entire 26 per cent holding in TVB to a group of investors for HK$6.26 billion.

He is survived by his wife, Mona Fong Yat-wah, with whom he had three sons and two daughters.

Now I know why most of the Shaw shows in the 1970s and early 80s were produced by Mona Fong.

Read somewhere that they met in the 1950s at a club in Singapore which he regularly patronised where she was a singer. Then he was already married.

So there could be two reasons for the move to Hong Kong:

1) how Old Fart treated the then independent Straits Times is a good indication of how Lightning will be bad for his business; and

2) personal.

Run Run Shaw was already active in the Shaw brothers’ film business when studying in an American established high school in Shanghai. Upon graduation he abandoned university studies in favour of film production. At 18, he already had made several productions.

The brothers were so successful in their first 2 years in business that other major players ganged up to force Shanghai and even Southeast Asian cinemas to stop showing their films. To counter this, in 1927, Run Run (brother number 6) and brother number 3 launched mobile cinemas in Singapore and Malaysia.

From 1928 onwards, the brothers went on a buying spree, acquiring cinemas and leisure parks in Malaysia and Singapore to build up their own network. In 1931, Run Run was sent to America to learn advanced Western techniques.

The brothers’ businesses in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong were greatly affected by the Japanese occupation during World War 2. After the war, brother number 2 returned to Hong Kong to look after this side of the business. At the same time, Run Run and brother number 3 rebuilt the Singapore business. However, the Hong Kong side did not do well as the two existing big players colluded to try to force the brothers out. In 1957, Run Run bought over a site at Clear Water Bay for HKD 320,000 and the rest is history.

Entertainment tycoon and philanthropist Sir Run Run Shaw passed away at home on Tuesday morning. He was 106.

Local Chinese media said he was 107.

Shaw was instrumental in shaping Hong Kong media culture, co-founding the Shaw Brothers Studio, which produced more than 1,000 films since its establishment in 1958, and Television Broadcasts (TVB), Hong Kong’s first free television, in 1967.

Shaw attracted top talents to the station, the city's largest film studio and television broadcaster, ushering in what many call the golden age of TV entertainment in Hong Kong.

TVB veteran Liza Wang praised Shaw for building Hong Kong into “Hollywood East” through his movies and TV productions.

Shaw was also a well-known philanthropist who had a passion for education. Lawmaker James To recalled he once asked Shaw how many schools he had. “He then sank into deep thoughts for two minutes,” To said in a radio show this morning. “Then he said he had more than 4,000 schools.”

To said he had run into Shaw a few times on the MTR many years ago. “He was in his 80s. He said it was rush hour and he had to be on time,” To said.

Former TVB general manager Stephen Chan agreed that the tycoon had placed high emphasis on education. “Don’t think education is expenses. Education is investment,” he quoted Shaw as saying to a government official.

Shaw was known to be a keen practitioner of qigong, an exercise aligning energy and the body. Former TVB general manager Ho Ting-kwan said Shaw began practising qigong in his 60s and he did it first thing in the morning. He said he ate very little each meal and went to bed early, which was his secrets to longevity.

Shaw was received Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1974 and was knighted in 1977. In 1998, he received Grand Bauhinia Medal from the Hong Kong government.

He set up Shaw Prize in 2004 awarding scientists who have achievements in the areas of astronomy, mathematics and life and medical science.

Shaw, born on November 23, 1907, originally founded the Shaw Organisation with his brother in 1926 in Shanghai. Four years later, the firm became Shaw Studios.

He invested in many notable films, including Ridley Scott's cult classic Blade Runner, according to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which gave him a Special Award just last month.

After a 44-year career, Run Run Shaw stepped down from all his TVB posts in December 2011. In March that year, he sold his entire 26 per cent holding in TVB to a group of investors for HK$6.26 billion.

He is survived by his wife, Mona Fong Yat-wah, with whom he had three sons and two daughters.

Shaw did not dance to lky tune.
Shaw began to shift their businesses out of SG and made hk their base after pap came to power.
To lky that is a vote of no confidence.
Ever wondered why a prominent family like shaw is not as connected as other elites or even have a listed entity in SG? Its due to lky vindictive nature.

He was a true philantropist. When I was working at Shaw centre I found out that many of the uncles & aunties who were working there for the Shaw organisation were actually charity cases. They were invited to join the Shaw organisation. These older workers would probably not otherwise be employed because of their age.

He also donated generously to the school(s) in Spore.

Hong Kong film pioneer Run Run Shaw dies aged 106

http://www.plushasia.com/article/27216

Hong Kong - The film pioneer hailed as the father of Hong Kong cinema, Run Run Shaw, died Tuesday at the age of 106.

Shaw, one of the co-producers of Ridley Scott's 1982 cult hit "Blade Runner" and a score of martial arts films, passed away at home, according to Television Broadcast Ltd (TVB), which he helped founded.

The media mogul, who was knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth in 1977 for his public service as a long-time backer of the Red Cross, founded TVB in 1967.

Its sitcoms, variety shows and soap operas became immensely popular among the Chinese diaspora in southeast Asia, putting the former British colony on the global entertainment map.

Silver screen mega-stars such as Chow Yuen-fat, Tony Leung, Stephen Chow and Andy Lau all had their big breaks on TVB television dramas in the 1980s.

"With his vision and energy, he had built (TVB) to become Hong Kong's premier television station and a world leader in the Chinese-language television industry," TVB said in a statement.

Hong Kong's chief executive Leung Chun-ying, leader of the city of seven million people, praised Shaw's achievements in the entertainment industry.

"Sir Run Run Shaw has for a long time promoted the entertainment industry in Hong Kong, his philanthropy also has spread from Hong Kong to China and beyond. He is an elder that we very much respect," Leung told reporters.

Shaw was born in Ningbo, in Zhejiang province in China, in November 1907.

With his elder brother Runme Shaw, he founded a film production house first in Shanghai in 1927, and later in Hong Kong.

Shaw Brothers Studio has since produced around 1,000 titles, including a score of kung fu films, with "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" and "Five Fingers of Death" hitting international theatres.

Shaw, whose movies were mostly in the Chinese language, failed to secure the legendary Bruce Lee in his production house following failed talks over renumeration.

Lee instead joined Golden Harvest, another Hong Kong-based production house founded by Shaw's former subordinate, Raymond Chow, from where the martial arts film icon shot to international stardom.

Shaw is also the backer of the $1 million Shaw Prize, often referred as the Nobel Prize of Asia.

The prize, which entered its tenth year in 2013 saw three scientists whose groundbreaking studies using fruit flies helped to uncover the workings of the human biological clock named the winners, among others.

Shaw's funeral will only be attended by family members, TVB said.

He is survived by his second wife Mona Fong, and his two sons and two daughters.
